An amnesia-stricken commando awakens in the care of the tribal people who rescued him. "Who am I?" he plead. The tribesmen think he's revealing his name - Whoami. The name sticks.
Jackie Chan plays the memory-plagued operative. Kicking his trademark blend of clever comedy and acrobatic Blam! Into a tale that has him on the trail of his identity and CIA turncoats. The story leaps from the African plains to high-rise Rotterdam. The action scenes are marvels of what-next? inventiveness. (Yes, wearing wooden shoes is a Netherlands tradition. But in Chan's world, someone may end up wearing them on his face). The movie may ask Who Am I? But in scene after fantastic scene, Chen engagingly and powerfully hammers home the answer.

Professional Review of "Who Am I ? (Warner Version)"
This professional review refers to Who Am I? (US Version)

The latter half of the nineties have been hard for Jackie Chan. He's watched Stephen Chow gobble up his box office receipts, he got beat at the box office by two movies he loathed: Andrew Lau's Young and Dangerous and Storm Riders, his celebrity became international while hometown audiences treated him as a has-been who fathers illegitimate children, more interested in his latest scandal than his latest film. Who Am I? is Jackie Chan's identity crisis on a global disaster scale. A nameless superagent, he's konked on the head while retrieving a piece of rock (this being a Jackie Chan movie, the konking is that which occurs between a helicopter and a large tree; and the rock is the kind of super-evil rock that blows up cities when it's shaken), causing Jackie to lose his memory. Who am I, indeed. Barely skirting out and out racism, a primitive African tribe finds him and, knowing a cute-as-a-button international superstar when they see one, promptly adopt him. Jackie goes native, but he knows there's something else he's supposed to be doing. What is it? Turn off the gas? Water the plants? Save the world? That's it! Save the world! And off he goes on a conveniently passing motorcross. Well wouldn't you know it, there's a conspiracy afoot and in order for the conspiracy to live, Jackie Chan must die. You'd think conspirators would watch more movies, but they don't, and they try to kill Jackie, and he kicks them in the faces in all kinds of funny ways, until finally they give up. This movie roams from Africa to Amsterdam, with some naughty Americans behind the scenes, and that's the problem. Off his home turf Jackie loses some of his vitality. He's not a fish out of water here, he's just a fish. When he stands on top of buildings and screams, "Whooooo ammmmm IIIIIII????" (mercilessly parodied in Last Ghost Standing by Chin Kar-lok) it almost looks like an outtake. Project A represented the first of Jackie Chan's movies to include all the now-familiar elements of a Jackie Chan movie - choreography, comedy, stunts, outtakes - and it also featured that famous fifty foot fall from the clock tower. Fifteen years later it's significant that there's another famous fall, filmed exactly the same way, except instead of Jackie Chan falling from a clock tower in Hong Kong it's a BMW falling from a parking garage in Rotterdam. There's significance in there somewhere. by Grady Hendrix (USA) |

This customer review refers to Who Am I?
Who am I? reminds me of other international hit by Jackie Chan "Operation Condor", with its different locations, international cast and many fight scenes. The acting of Jackie himself (although is entirely in English, not counting the few words in Cantonese) is way better than some other English written dialoge films, such as "Rush Hour", "Shanghai Noon" and the most weak appearance for Jackie in the dull and uninspiring "The Tuxedo". I think that Hollywood and Jackie is not as successful as Hong Kong and Jackie... "Who am I?" brings the best in Jackie as a martial arts choreographer or action choreographer and although the plot seems a bit too thin at places, the action compensates for that. A solid performance and one distinctive film with which every martial arts movies fan will be entertained.

I thought the beginning of this movie was both hilarious (check out Jackie's makeup when he was living with the African tribe) and has a good international flavour. All stunts from escaping at the hotel to the roof-top fighting sequence were hot. The only annoying thing is there's no Region 4 (Aus) dvd available with dual language format (cantonese and english). Jackie still the man!!

This was Jackies' last HK film before heading to America. Its a big-budget, western style action-adventure, with an international cast. I kept the 5.1 Cantonese track on with subs, for most of the film, although the last half is in English. Once the pace picks up, it never lets up. The print transfer is beautiful, and the subs are excellent. This is the 'Around the World' Jackie film you want. Uncut and unbutchered. Highest Honors!

I've seen the u.s. version of this and I love the fighting scenes. They're all excellent, but my favourite is when Jackie fights the guys on the roof. Awesome! Highly Recommended.

This is probably the last really outstanding Hong Kong "Jackie Style" movie that Jackie Chan has done before making American style movies...Although, a lot of his other films, after "Who am I", has Jacky doing his signature Choreography and fighting, it is really a far drift from is own genuine produce, directed, and Choreographed creation. This is a really good film for someone that's getting to know Who's Jacky Chan...This is one of those film that you can watch over and over 'til you're stick of it, but in the end you'll come back and watch it again, and each time you' see something new... Try it...
