YesAsia Editorial Description
The Wonder Girls have been globetrotting the last few years, spreading their catchy retro dance hits in the US and every corner of Asia. More time abroad means less time at home, so the Wonder Girls have been relatively absent from K-pop. Since Nobody, the group has only released one Korean single, last year's 2 Different Tears. Now the girls are finally making their K-pop comeback with their second full-length album. No more retro concept this time: the Wonder Girls return with a sophisticated new look and sound in their sassy dance hit Be My Baby.

의 작사/작곡, ‘Me, in’의 작사/작곡/편곡에 참여하였으며, 유빈은 ‘Girls Girls’, ‘Me, in’, ‘Sweet Dreams’의 랩 메이킹에, 혜림은 ‘Act Cool’의 랩 메이킹에 참여하는 등 멤버들의 앨범 참여도 주목할만하다.
특히 이번 앨범의 타이틀 곡 Be My Baby는 원더걸스의 음악적 뿌리인 소울 음악을 현대식 Up tempo로 재해석 한 곡으로, 원더걸스의 미국 TV드라마 ‘Wonder Girls at the Apollo’의 OST곡이기도 하다.

Hey, wonderful boy...wonder years!
|
When I first bought “The Wonder Years” I thought it okay and only found WG strong on their debut album collective (yes, I know “Nobody” was on that mini, but that fine song didn’t hit on me straight away). WG are probably one of the first K-pop I tried other than ‘retrospectively’ Fin.K.L and Jung-hwa Uhm in 2006/07; other than that it was k-pop from K-movie OSTs. Post debut WG and Girls’ Generation – its all gone a bit mad hasn’t it? WG have though bit the steel and mucked on through to higher echelons and are doing well. This, their second full album is also worthy for the fem fashionista set. Yes, “WG2” is retro (although for post modern music, retro is impossible to avoid) and again here influenced song straits from the age of Mowtown, 80s synth pop, American soul, synthetic blues-rock and modern RnB. Most songs though are good and some very good dance/rock pop retro with “Stop!”, “Be My Baby” and “Me, in” and Ye-eun and the girls Rnb vocals are very good. A pop album is always going to fare well reflecting good derivative music material, and “WG2” as been well thought out. Okay, its influential retro style doesn’t scream anything unique, but to discount the potent energy of the music and singing here is like chipping away at classic pop music albums. Yesteryear brought about new sounds and ideas (which I love), but sometimes tried and tested music genres feel fresher with younger verve and spirit, modern production and all vibrant and relevant to the modern age. Still, “WG2” is so eclectically nostalgic that I don’t think much ‘retro’ as been left out. Certainly leans towards the Mowtown American music, RnB vocal and fun rap. This CD played at most places wouldn’t get less noticed by its pandering to musical times past, or modern. WG and the modern pop idiom (a lot in K-pop) synchronise music eclecticism with Mowtown, electro synth dance and soul/RnB quite well. Of the Mowtown, well, “Be My Baby” could be a Diane Ross and “Me, in” a blues rock RnB and “Stop” a high melodic ‘biggie’ popular in the 80s and 90s rock-pop-synth single charts. Anyway, WG bless em have soldiered on in the US, and have got favourable with new fans and finally have a good second album to boot. (Eun-ye seems a bit of a closet rocker though, I think). “Nu Shoes” or a “G.N.O.” speak the language of the fem and for me, I’m not really going to get all gooey over fancy shoes. But no matter, “WG2” is a good album giving the ladies two decent pop albums to date. |

I was never a huge admirer of Wonder Girls. I liked them and their songs well enough, but I never really listened to them on my mp3 player or bought their cd-s. However, they hit a jackpot with this cd. We're talking about some seriously good music here. There isn't a single song I dislike. In fact, I LOVE all the songs. Rarely do you get to hear an album so good. It's usually 2-5 good songs and the rest just blend one into the other, evaporating from memory as soon as they stop playing. This isn't about being a fan of a group or supporting it - this is just about appreciating good music. My favorite song would be Stop!, followed closely by Me, in; Be my Baby; Girls girls, G.N.O. and Nu shoes. The packaging is really good as well - none of those random/weird stuff YG and SM are doing these days that make getting the cd out of the case an epic adventure full of traps and surprises. It's easy and simple to get the cd out, pictures are pretty and the quality is nice and the postcards are a lovely bonus. |

I love Wonder Girls, and I'm so happy they're back!!! I was waiting it out to buy the album until I found out about his version and how there's only 5,000 copies, so I was quick to getting it. Reading the contents, I already felt skeptical forking out that much money for this, but I figured that it's Wonder Girls, and after a long time, they wouldn't pull some ordinary gimmick of overhyping a Special Limited Edition. HOW WRONG I WAS. While the album itself is good and possibly the best since WG's The Wonder Years, the whole packaging and extras in this version IS NOT WORTH IT. It comes in this huge textbook sized plain black box that was the Wonder Girls logo and the tracklist in glossy black font. When you open it, you get a pop-up of the Wonder Girls in their Be My Baby outfits, and it looks like the set of the MV. You get a "postcard" that has the girls' autographs (but they're copies, not hand-written by the girls themselves), the what I suppose is an entry form (all in Korean), the regular album, and a one-sized polka-dotted shirt with "Wonder Girls - Wonder World - Special Limited Edition". Honestly, the shirt is tacky. =/ While I love Wonder Girls, they really didn't put anything "special" for this version. No new pictures, photobook, or anything that you'd expect from other special editions. The regular album even just had this sticker in the corner that said "2nd Album Limited Edition Wonder World". Honestly, who are you trying to fool? Just from the black box, you kind of get that omen already that not much was put into making this "special". |

50 bucks for a tee shirt and a pop up paper model...I think not. The album is definitely worth the buy but I don't think it's worth the money to add about 39 dollars for a tee shirt stuff. I have been avoiding the Wonder Girls since Sun Mi left the group, but after giving their newest album a chance I was very pleasantly surprised and I think the wonderful in me has reemerged. JYP has finally let go of that awful retro concept but not completely there were a couple songs where you can still feel that sort of vibe. The song Act Cool was Hye Lim's solo and I think I can finally respect and accept her as part of the group now. Her english is great and her voice is up there beside the power vocals in the group SunYe and YeEun. I will still miss Sun Mi regardless. It's a good album but not worth the money for that extra stuff just go with the regular version. |

This is the 2nd Full Length Album of the Wonder Girls and I must say that I am very impressed. The members have come a long way and they have upped their game with their vocals, style and looks. All of the songs are amazing, they are all single-wrothy songs. If you like the Wonder Girls or are just interested in them you MUST BUY this album. I have no regrets whatsoever in buying this album, it's just that amazing! |
