A tale from The Water Margin
|
A pretty former servant girl, married off by her jealous mistress to an ugly hunchback, causes scandal and bloodshed in this story from The Water Margin. Resentful of her lot, she treats her unappealing but good-hearted husband badly. When his younger brother, a celebrated hero played by Kwan Tak Hing, comes to stay with them, she drives him away by her attempts to seduce him. Frustrated, she instead reciprocates the attentions of a less moral local man and begins an affair which results in public disgrace and eventually murder. This is a hugely enjoyable film if you like the cinema of this era, and it's a must-see for anyone who is interested in The Water Margin. Fans of action cinema should watch out for a young Yuen Siu Tin, and know that the fight choreography is by Lau Kar Leung. Kwan Tak Hing takes a break from Wong Fei Hung and puts in a performance that is high on the eccentric vocal stylings he is famous for. Often in this film he seems to occupy a different plane of reality to the rest of the cast, shouting his lines when everyone else is only speaking. As usual for VCDs of this kind of film, there are no subtitles, so you will be a bit lost if you don't understand Cantonese. Picture quality is as you'd expect, and while there are a couple of gaps, the print seems quite complete. Recommended. |
