許仙前世乃大善人呂伯，呂伯於返鄉途中由乞丐手中買下白蛇，放生於山林中，白蛇修化一千八百年幼化美女白素貞與青蛇下凡歷劫報恩。許仙西湖借傘與白素貞結為夫妻。素貞飲雄黃酒而現出原形嚇死許仙，白素貞盜仙草救許仙還陽。法海欲傳衣缽于許仙，強留許仙留宿寺中，白素貞天條而被法海囚禁雷峰塔下，許仙失妻後哀痛欲絕，決心尋找高人搭救妻子，二十年後其子許夢蛟長大成人知悉身世，奮發上進考中狀元，告假返鄉途中得遇許仙，父子相認，許仙得知夢蛟將祭塔救母，遂欣然同往雷峰塔。許仙、白素貞夫妻團圓，但白素貞塵緣已盡，歸位仙班，而許仙則看破紅塵，出家為僧，後藝術家佛祖接引。
