Memorable early Kurosawa effort
|
"Drunken Angel" is an intriguing early film from director Kurosawa Akira, the first film in which he felt he was able to express his own artistic voice. Shimura Takashi plays Sanada, a physician who has squandered his great medical skills through his dissolute, heavy-drinking lifestyle. A very young Mifune Toshiro plays Matsunaga, a mid-level yakuza thug. Matsunaga visits Sanada when he takes a bullet in the hand. While Sanada is removing the bullet, he notices that Matsunaga has a terrible cough; Sanada immediately suspects tuberculosis. Matsunaga's boss, Okada (Yamamoto Reisaburo) is released from prison; the wild celebratory nightlife that ensues takes a terrible toll on Matsunaga. Okada soon discovers that his old girlfriend now works and lives with Dr. Sanada. Okada wants her back, but Matsunaga -- not yet entirely corrupted by his gangster life -- seeks to intervene on the old girlfriend's behalf. On his way to meet with Okada about her, Matsunaga overhears Okada describing a scheme to eliminate him. Kurosawa masterfully has set the stage for an explosive confrontation between the thugs. "Drunken Angel" is a deeply involving noirish melodrama, rich in Tokyo's fetid post-war atmosphere. Kurosawa begins to explore themes in the fascinating character of Sanada that subsequently would blossom into the great film "Ikiru". Mifune gives a galvanizing, star-making performance as the conflicted consumptive mobster. I recommend this film very highly. |
