YesAsia Editorial Description

Korea's newest idol band has arrived... on television! The ultra popular SBS idol drama You're Beautiful takes audiences behind the glitz and glamor of a fictional superstar pop band, following their backstage trials, dorm life, romantic drama, and unstoppable rise to fame. Heartthrob Jang Keun Suk (Beethoven Virus) stars as Hwang Tae Kyung, the bristly lead singer of top idol band A.N.JELL. FTIsland's Lee Hong Ki plays the band's cheerful British-Korean drummer Jeremy, while CNBLUE's Jung Yong Hwa vaulted to fame playing sensitive guitarist Kang Shin Woo. Starlet Park Shin Hye (Palace S) gender bends as Go Mi Nam, an aspiring nun who steps in for her twin brother to become the newest member of A.N.JELL! Crossing Tae Kyung with her bumbling ways, Mi Nam stirs up a parade of headaches as she tries to adjust to idol life and keep her identity a secret. But the real trouble begins when the other band members all fall for her!

The latest drama from the Hong Sisters, the hit-making screenwriters behind My Girl and Hong Gil Dong, You're Beautiful became a big sensation when it aired in late 2009. Though the drama pulled in only moderate viewership ratings, it attracted a very loyal following both in Korea and online. Mi Nam's angsty romantic triangle with arrogant cutie Tae Kyung and guardian angel Shin Woo, in particular, inspired Boys Over Flowers-level buzz and fandom. After School's UEE (Queen Seon Duk) also co-starred in the drama as a two-faced pop idol in love with Tae Kyung.

This edition comes with three hours of English-subtitled special features and a 10-page song lyrics booklet.

Meet Korea's top new band, A.N.JELL!

From the writers of My Girl comes the irresistible television hit You're Beautiful, which takes viewers into the exciting and hectic world of K-pop showbiz!

Taekyung (Jang Keun-Suk) is A.N.JELL’s arrogant and insufferable lead singer. Guitarist Shinwoo (Jung Yong-Hwa of C.N.Blue) is too perceptive for his own good, and happy-go-lucky drummer Jeremy (Lee Hong-Ki of F.T. Island) is just plain slow on the uptake. Into the boy band mix comes A.N.JELL’s bumbling newbie, Minam (Park Shin-Hye). But what the fans don't know is that he's actually a she! Roped into posing as her twin brother, Minam has to hide her real identity. But secrets have a way of coming out, especially when her bandmates start falling for her!

Pig Rabbit Power
Ratings don't mean anything, at least when it comes to the 2009 Korean drama You're Beautiful. Playing in the same timeslot as the all mighty IRIS, You're Beautiful only managed to average in the 10% range, underwhelming numbers considering the hot young cast and buzz surrounding the drama. Based on ratings, it would be a stretch to even describe You're Beautiful as a "hit". But based on the loyal online following, the fervent fans, the best-selling soundtracks, the abundant media coverage, and the shopping spree the drama-inspired pig rabbit doll sparked on YesAsia, You're Beautiful was most definitely a hit, Korea's first mania drama in a long while.

The gender-bending angle has been done to death in the last few years with dramas like HanaKimi, Coffee Prince, Painter of the Wind, and Mendol, but You're Beautiful makes it all seem fresh again, even while employing familiar character setups and narrative devices. A cute leading lady who's even cuter as a guy flanked by actors beautiful enough to be girls is a sure-win formula in these parts, and Park Shin Hye, Jang Keun Suk, Lee Hong Ki, and Jung Yong Hwa together form a very pretty picture indeed. Having the young idol cast actually play K-pop idols in the drama only increases the eye-candy and fan-squealing factor that much more.

Park Shin Hye bumbles into the hearts of all as nun-in-training Mi Nyu who reluctantly poses as her twin brother Mi Nam to become the newest member of idol band A.N.JELL. In contrast to the brass and spunk of most Korean rom-com heroines, Mi Nam's main charm is her wide-eyed innocence. She's very slow on the uptake, leading to many hilarious run-ins as well as plentiful relationship angst that would feel contrived if not for the characters' refreshingly straightforward emotions and Park's great chemistry with her co-stars, in particular Jang Keun Suk who acts up a charismatic storm as hotheaded bandleader Tae Kyung.

Jang Keun Suk's status as Korea's best young actor is secure with or without this drama, but You're Beautiful really highlights just how wide his acting range and his devilish grin are. Tae Kyung emerges as the most emotionally developed character of the drama by force of Jang's involved performance as the sweet tough guy with a painful past and an unintentionally goofy side. He generates as many different facial expressions as he does idol hairstyles in the drama - which is no easy task considering his hair seems to change from scene to scene.

While Jang Keun Suk's portrayal of Tae Kyung is carefully designed and perfectly executed, rookie Jung Yong Hwa shows both his inexperience and potential in the soulmate/romantic rival role of Shin Woo. The lack of method is perhaps the best thing a newcomer can bring, and Jung's underacting ends up working well for his Ji Hoo/Hanazawa Rui-like character. It's not hard to see why so many viewers fell for the sensitive guardian angel waiting for Mi Nam to return his unrequited love. As the unknown name among a famous cast, Jung Yong Hwa is the one who really makes a breakthrough, and he aptly grows into his character as the drama progresses. Lee Hong Ki gets less room to shine as an actor but he is completely lovable as happy-go-lucky drummer Jeremy, and the bus scene in which his character confesses love and confronts heartbreak is one of the most affecting of the drama.

In comparison to Jang Keun Suk and Jung Yong Hwa, Park Shin Hye actually has a less complex character to work with since Mi Nam is naive to the point of dense, but it is her charmingly sincere and straightforward role that anchors the story's emotional and comedic turns. It's nice to see the young actress finally translate her long budding talent into the representative leading performance that's been missing from her calling card.

The stars that attracted attention behind the scenes are naturally the screenwriters, the Hong Sisters. As they've shown with hits like My Girl, Couple or Trouble, and Hong Gil Dong, the Hong Sisters don't write deep and complex stories, but they do create characters and scenarios that engage and entertain audiences. In You're Beautiful, they tweak the idol romantic comedy formula to near populist perfection. The series' climatic conflicts are on the weak side, but the relationship drama, idol band concept, and mischievous humor are exactly what connect with drama fans. You're Beautiful is filled with key moments, be they comedic or dramatic, that are very memorable and begging to be turned into GIF images: Tae Kyung being chased by a wild boar, A.N.JELL reenacting a CM jingle in the supermarket, the Frankenstein birth of the pig rabbit doll, and the melodramatic fan fiction fantasy sequence that proves once and for all that the makers of the drama know exactly who they're selling to.

funny & cute Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I found myself laughing throughout the drama. lots of scenes are very funny. they even made a few touching or sad scenes funny by throwing in a bit of comedy. Although I wasn't attracted to park shin hye at first, but i think i am now. She is soo damn cute. I can't get enough of her aeygo and silly expressions. Being into k-pop myself. The storyline fit very well for me even though there wasn't much singing, but it was hilarious watching their fanclub.

A Classic Among Dramas Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is the most fun, beautiful and intriguing drama! The cast is amazing. Each character becomes very dear to you as you watch them develop throughout the drama. To keep it short, this is a must watch for anyone who is interested in kpop and k-entertainment. You're Beautiful ranks among the Classics such as Boys Over Flowers, Full House and Coffee Prince.

A Fun Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is the best Korean Drama I have seen in a long time. While mostly stepping away from formula, the characters interact wonderfully and the humor extends to the end of the show. Yay! I'm almost glad it did not get extended as they can sometimes drag out and the storylines sometimes change and the characters with them.

The soundtrack is super! The two leads are not in bands outside of the show, but they should be. They do their own singing along with their great acting. The other two leads really are in bands outside of the show and it just adds to the fun. If you want something romantic, charming, funny, easy to watch with a great soundtrack, this is for you. I couldn't recommend it more.

Addicting Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This show is so addicting! I can see why it is so popular. I'm a guy, but I'm still loving the plot, characters, comedy, drama, and romance. AND NO, I am not gay. I just decided to check it out because I'm a fan of F.T. Island and C.N. Blue. C.N. Blue is actually one of my top three bands right now. But anyways...Yeah, I decided to check it out, and I loved it. Something about this show just stands out above most shows of any genre. I definitely give this show a 10/10. I recommend that any fan of k-pop check this out.
