Brings back some fond childhood memories
November 3, 2009 Picked By A-Xiang Joe See all this editor's picks No doubt we all had our naughty moments when we were young, especially when things didn't go our way. Everyone has their own little story to tell about childhood, like female director Lee Jung Hyang's The Way Home.
In The Way Home Yoo Seung Ho portrays Sang Woo, a small boy addicted to playing video games and eating junk food. His nightmare arrives in the form of a stay at his grandmother's (Kim Eul Boon) place far away from the heart of Seoul, where he was immersed in all the things he likes best. Told to behave while his single mother tries to find a job, Sang Woo isn't quite willing to oblige. Staying with his deaf and mute grandmother doesn't make things easier. Of course, he is just his usual bad mean self, playing video games all day and not giving consideration to anything else around him, let alone his grandmother. It's only when the batteries of his portable game player run out that the little rascal suddenly finds himself in a dilemma. Focusing on the mischief caused by the child protagonist and how the passionate care of his grandmother finally serves as an icebreaker between the two, The Way Home manages to attract the viewer's interest throughout. Even though we can somehow sense what will happen as a result of Sang Woo's bad demeanor, the film still binds our attention to the screen as we eagerly await what comes next. I found the scene in which Sang Woo tries to explain what Kentucky Fried Chicken is to his grandmother and his attempt to impress a neighborhood girl with a new haircut as unforgettable highlights of the movie. After overcoming my assumption that a movie about a 7-year-old boy and deaf-mute elderly woman just couldn't be my cup of tea, I discovered this film to be a real charmer. |
