1943年，抗日戰爭進入了最艱苦卓絕的日子，23歲的高樹江在北平丫髻山的山洞裏宣誓入黨。哥哥剛好當天娶親，可就在新娘進村的路上，日本鬼子的飛機炸死了大哥，婚禮變成了葬禮，高老爹老淚縱橫地硬逼著高樹江娶了這個比他大八歲的女人。
日寇開始對冀東根據地大掃蕩，高樹江率領區小隊奮力抵抗，掩護劉家店的鄉親們轉移，但高老爹和高樹江的妻子高劉氏在逃難中走散，後來鄉親們說他倆被鬼子殺害在山溝裏。高樹江頑強地同日寇抗擊直至最後一刻，抱著日本鬼子跳下了捨身崖。這一幕被遠處的一個年輕女孩疙瘩看到了，於是疙瘩冒死從山崖下救活了摔成重傷的高樹江，他醒後第一句話就告訴疙瘩“我是共產黨”，從此疙瘩堅信共產黨就是好人。
一晃幾年，抗日戰爭終於取得了勝利。疙瘩已長成了亭亭玉立的大姑娘，參加了革命，已是區委書記的高樹江看著窗外的一棵玉蘭樹正開著潔白的玉蘭花，為她取名“白玉蘭”。
