Unusual entry in Zatoichi series
|
In "Zatoichi and the Chest of Gold", Zatoichi (Katsu Shintaro) comes to a village to pray at the grave of a man he had killed; he is consumed with guilt over what he regards as an unnecessary death (although Ichi actually was only acting in self-defense). The village, and its neighboring communities, have just managed to scratch together the gold to pay their onerous taxes. When that gold is stolen, Zatoichi is blamed for the crime. Ichi swears that he will track down the real robbers and return the gold to the villagers, but fulfilling his promise seems an impossible task, as he finds himself confronted with a very nasty criminal gang in cahoots with the local superintendent. "Chest of Gold" is told in a very melodramatic style unusual for this fine series. The incidental music goes way over-the-top in seeking to soak that melodrama. Visually, the film's director employs a few tricks early in the film that are jarring, but the movie also is laced with some truly beautiful images. Katsu, as Ichi, is superb, as usual. He has many moments in the film that are unforgettable, such as when he dances a little jig to some folk music. It took me a while to warm up to "Zatoichi and the Chest of Gold", primarily due to all that melodrama in the film's first half and the movie's very complicated plot, but as the movie heads to its climax in the second half it becomes riveting. Consequently, your humble reviewer can recommend this exciting movie. |
