YesAsia Editorial Description

Japanese director/actor Kitano Takeshi (Battle Royale) finds himself back at the forefront of both domestic and international film worlds with his latest film Zatoichi! Through the momentum of its international premiere at the 60th Venice Film Festival in 2003, where it garnered the Silver Lion award for Best Director, and the Toronto Film Festival, where it took the People's Choice award, Zatoichi appears poised to turn Kitano into a household name on an international scale.

Based on one of Japan's most famous film characters, the movie tells the story of a blind masseur/master swordsman named Zatoichi. Wandering into a town ruled by corrupt officials and a gang of rough mobsters, he comes across a samurai named Hattori (Asano Tadanobu), who is working for the mobsters in order to pay for treatment for his ailing wife. His circle of friends widens when he strikes up a relationship with the beautiful sisters Osei and Okinu, who pretend to be dancers as they plot their revenge for the murder of their parents. As the story progresses, the tension builds gradually to a boiling head, exploding in a fantastic toe-tapping ending that will leave you longing for multiple viewings!

This silver screen attraction is a must for all Kitano fans, as well as fans of samurai movies, so get your hands on this extravaganza by the master of independent J-films!

Professional Review of "Zatoichi ((DVD) (Standard Edition) (English Subtitled) (Japan Version)"

April 20, 2004

This professional review refers to Zatoichi (DTS Version) (Hong Kong Version)
I am not a critic. I am a reviewer

(It's a line I've nicked off an article Steven Grant (an American comic book writer) once wrote in one of his forums. It being applicable, I thought I'd use it for myself.)

So why the distinction and why now? Well, the thing with being a reviewer is that all I really do is fulfil a consumer role - I basically recommend whether something is worth seeing or not. I'm not really supposed to get down and really break down a movie and explain about all the really cool stuff I might just happen to pick up from a film. Besides, for fear of ruining a film for people, there's only so much you can talk about it. Which is a real shame because something like Zatoichi, while being quite a decent samurai flick in itself, has some pretty cool themes and homages that just raises it above being just another film romanticising the Samurai era of Japan.

At it's most basic, Zatoichi is a pretty, by the numbers, samurai and swords film with the usual one, incredibly skilled man, out to right wrongs and make the world a better place. The CGI blood and swords are an interesting idea but the technology doesn't seem developed enough for it not to be noticeable. Whether this is intentional or not (after recent homages like Kill Bill, it's hard to tell whether something is SUPPOSED to look fake or just inadvertantly like that) is something a critic (not me!) would discuss. There's that level of moral ambiguity and complexity about our heroes and villians that we have come to expect and the vicious and frenetic fights that we keep coming back for. Still, nothing we haven't really seen before.

What really made Zatoichi a film that raises it above its surface perceptions is just the entire rhythm of the film. It is, in fact, the central theme of the film and it's interesting to watch the characters develop and relate to it - until you come to an end that you can see in common with ideas that run through a number of Kurosawa's samurai films. Admittedly, at times, it is quite self indulgent but the overall film is such a complete experience, it's easy to accept Kitano's occasional excess.

Zatoichi is certainly a different interpretation of the Zatoichi mythology. More importantly it is a great film that stands on its own and another reason why it is worth hanging out for every film that Takeshi Kitano makes.

Talent at work Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is a great movie. Sound plays a key part in the film, appropriately given the lead character. Rolling dice, workers in a field, the tap-dance finale - nicely done. Violent as one should be expecting, but there's depth here too.

One of those 'must watch' movies. Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This film easily hits that sweet spot of fun, watchability and quality.

I'm finding it hard to describe what it is I like so much about this movie as so much is worth talking about. Set in a feudal Japan with wandering Samurai but touched with just the right amount of weird. The 'fights' as they are take the form of a kind of quick sword draw that reminds me of gun fights in a Sergio Leone spaghetti western.

The only small criticism I have is that some of the characters aren't as fleshed out as I would have liked, especially the brother and sister. This is a very small issue and in no way affects how enjoyable a watch this film is.

Modernization of a classic Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I really didn't know what to expect but I knew of the old Zatoichi series & thought I'd check this out. Glad I did. It is a recent installment with up to date special effects with some quirky Japanese humor scattered throughout the movie if you disregard the dance routine at the end. The pseudo comic relief is unexpected & there are some interesting characters in this story that keeps the audiences' attention. Definately worth a look-see if you're wanting up-date your samurai collection.

long but not boring Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Another of the famous Japanese blind swordsman tale. Undoubtedly lots of baddies killed. The Americans could learn how to save all their bullets, bullets that only make massive destructions. As always Samarai films are not only just about fighting and splashing blood, there are usually a few twists behind a good story.

Unexpected but brilliant Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I was unsure about purchasing this movie but now that i have i'm glad i did, as with all 'Beat' Takeshi films there's always unexpected content and style but i never thought i would see comedy too (which is brilliant), the story is quite complex in that there are sub-plots for many of the characters but i found that it made it even more interesting, as far as the swordsmanship goes, i thought the action sequences were very good, Takeshi makes a great Zatoichi, and he also received the silver lion prize for best director. The effects are obviously CGI but still very well done, so if you are looking for a good samurai movie i think you would be suprised by 'Zatoichi'!!
