Hong Kong movie star Cecilia Cheung steps into the role of legendary singer and actress Zhou Xuan for this 40-episode biopic drama. Directed by Yan Hao, Zhou Xuan is Cecilia Cheung's first television series, and she is perhaps uniquely fit to capture the melancholic beauty of the luminary starlet, whose legacy includes the film Street Angel and classic songs like "Shanghai Nights", "Four Seasons Song", and "Wandering Songstress". The drama is shot entirely in Shanghai, with the award-winning Cheung Suk Ping, most known for his work with Wong Kar Wai, serving as art director. What he did for In the Mood for Love and Days of Being Wild, he brings to Zhou Xuan, capturing the atmosphere and beauty of 1930s Shanghai.

The drama follows Zhou Xuan's life from age 16 to 28, the golden years of her youth. Behind the bright lights and alluring smile though is a bittersweet story of a young woman in constant search of self and happiness, from her lifelong desire to find her birth parents to her ill-fated romances. Pang Yueming from Moment in Peking plays Zhou Xuan's husband Yan Hua, and Taiwanese actors Ambrose Hsu and Lin Wei Jun are part of the supporting cast.
