Starring Gong Li and Tony Leung Ka Fai, Zhou Yu's Train tells the story of a beautiful girl called Zhou Yu whose work entails by painting fabric and ceramic vases. The girl goes to visit her lover, introverted poet Liang Jiahui, who works in the library each week. As she has to get to the library by train, Zhou Yu soon catches the attention of a veterinarian (Sun Honglei), which leads to a complicated triangle love affair.

Gong Li, the female icon of modern Chinese cinema, teams up again with Sun Zhou, following their collaboration on the moving, and awardwinning drama Breaking the Silence. She gives a stupendous performance in possibly the most sensual role of her career, as a woman caught between two lovers, and two dimensions of desire. Zhou Yu, a ceramic artisan in China's rural Northwest, has a deep rapport with Chen Qing, a shy, sensitive poet. Taking a long train ride every weekend just to make mad passionate love with him, her longing seems insatiable. Until one day, she meets the hedonistic vet Zhang Qiang, and begins a torrid affair, which takes her to another train station, and another level of lust. Driven by the locomotive of love and desire, she hurtles through a dark tunnel of no return.

This isn't an easy middle of the road film, in fact, middle of the road is uncharacteristic for Sun Zhou so it isn't going to be a mainstream success either. For any Gong Li fans, this film will probably be all the more disappointing as Gong Li's sensuality lies in her acting rather than mere superficial beauty (wake up guys!) as her appearance is strikingly low-key and average compared to her other roles in films in which her sumptuous beauty only arouses further the penetration of the senses into the personae of her characters. The first time I watched this film it sent me to sleep. A year later, I've realised why. The English subtitles are very weak and miss the beautifully poetic transformations of phrases which echo throughout the film's modern hand-held sequences and stark use of cold tungsten lighting for an atmosphere of desolation. The filming also deliberately derives a slice of everyday life across a cross-section of China, from rural to city dwellings, connected by trains with a simple almost documentary like feel without ornate and grandiose adornment. This is probably why it's so easy to fall asleep and miss the subtle and powerful force of the lovers passion. It doesn't help that the English subtitles become so diluted in builders' English that it does no justice to the Mandarin. Yet once those barriers are surmounted, there's a film noir masterpiece under the covers. Not for the uninitiated nor for those looking for a soppy romance. Really deserves better subtitling for the future. |

Not much
| I have seen this film a long time already but i was only able to review it just now. The love story began in the train...of course as the title says. The actors are good but i don't like the story. And the pacing is a bit slow. You will fall asleep. |

ZHOU YU'S TRAIN is the type of film that may -- just may -- require repeat viewing in order to take in all the thia story has to offer: if you blink -- much like the effect of the quickly passing scenery out the window of any train -- you might miss something better explored, as the ending of this evenly-paced romance shows. While one could hardly argue with the notion that there are parts of TRAIN that appear uneven and, at least, forced, the film still manages to deliver a perspective worth a single view: Zhou Yu falls in love with a poet she must take the train to see, but, aboard the train, she finds herself somewhat distracted by a veterinarian who insists -- despites her mild protests -- on pursuing her affections. As a result, TRAIN explores more than one budding relationship and can be confusing on more than one occasion. In fact, one could make the argument that what truly is transpiring here cannot be fully appreciated until the film's final few moments, and, even then, the viewer may be left with many unanswered questions. However, what is clear is Zhou's desire to seek the answers to questions of the various loves in her life (two men, friendship, art, etc.), and the narrative clearly appears to be a device through which an exploration of the female mind and heart is undertaken. Whether you reach a destination is entirely up to the viewr. Of course, the best scenery is, indeed, Gong Li. If you're a fan of her work, then TRAIN is definitely for you. |

Slow, but intense.

Subtle, intense, poetic, thoughtful, dark and brooding are all words that describe this film. The performances by the three leads are impeccable. The idea is intriguing the sets perfect and the story line provocative, yet I cannot quite warm to this film. This tale about an indecisive and, in my opinion, selfish and self-centered young woman who is looking for love and lust without much caring who she injures along the way, is so confused it makes you dizzy! There are moments of incredible sensuality, power, and sorrow, but they are few and far between. It seems a lot of film and talent was wasted on this one! And what a shame that is. Three terrific and gifted actors, all of them pretty darn sexy, trapped in a movie that is, not so much arty, as dead. I cant bring myself to give it a high rating, even though anything with Tony Leung Ka Fai is worth a look. I suggest you rent or borrow it before putting out real money. Its definitely worth a look, but not necessarily two. |

She's back!!

Gong Li, one of the most beatiful women in the world and one of the finest actors in the world is back! After traveling throught history in most of her previous roles, it is nice to see her in a contemporary role for a change. While this is not the best movie she has ever made, it is great viewing. As in most of her films, she plays a confused, lost and, at times, tragic character. I will not go into the plot (watch the movie!!), but as for other reviews I have read, I feel too many people try too hard to analyse the movie. This film, like most of Ms. Li's films, might require some thought on the viewers part (oh, no!!) to fully enjoy it. Maybe repeated viewings are necessary. Personally, I feel it would be a great "date movie"! Overall, I thought it was very well directed with great acting and a lovely music score. Then again, maybe I'm happy just to see Gong Li on the screen again. It has been much too long!!! |
