Where Is Jung Seung Pil (DVD) (Korea Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Directed by Kang Suk Beom (Sunflower), the offbeat detective comedy Where Is Jung Seung Pil (a.k.a. The Weird Missing Case of Mr. J) revolves around a missing person case that takes on a life of its own. Popular actor Lee Bum Soo (The Bronze Medalist) stars as the eponymous million-dollar man, while Kim Min Sun (Portrait of a Beauty) plays his fiancee and Son Chang Min (The Mafia, The Salesman) the relentless detective. Late actress Jang Ja Yeon from Boys Over Flowers also appears in the film.

The day before closing a big deal, genius fund manager Jung Seung Pil (Lee Bum Soo) suddenly goes missing. His fiancee Mi Seon (Kim Min Sun) reports the disappearance to the police, and dogged Detective Kim (Son Chang Min) is soon on the case, investigating envious colleagues, embezzlement suspicions, and prime suspect Mi Seon, who recently took out a life insurance plan for Jung. With the media taking an interest, Seung Pil's mysterious disappearance balloons into a headline-splashing case of abduction, assault, and whatever else one can imagine. All kinds of unlikely people are getting pulled into the case, but where exactly is Jung Seung Pil?

Case of the Missing Fund Manager
When a fund manager goes missing, people start talking. And when people start talking, things start happening. In the case of Jung Seung Pil (Lee Bum Soo), many things start happening after he makes a stop at the convenience store, and fails to come back. His worried fiancee Mi Seon (Kim Min Sun) calls the police, but the women-hating detective (Son Chang Min) in charge of the case immediately suspects her of foul play. Add in a sensationalist reporter, an unreliable witness, a wayward colleague, and an opportunist police chief, and the missing case of Jung Seung Pil is soon getting the full media circus treatment. Meanwhile, Jung Seung Pil is - you guessed it - stuck in a public bathroom. I hate it when that happens.

In case the in-your-face Lee Bum Soo cover doesn't tip you off, Where is Jung Seung Pil? is an oddball comedy that serves up some inventive laughs. If there's any actor who can act his way out of four walls just by flaring his eyes and shooting his mouth off, it would be Lee Bum Soo. He puts his serious comedic talents to full use here, going from hotshot to high-strung to downright hallucinatory during his desperate efforts to escape a locked bathroom. Jung Seung Pil's reactions to his absurd misfortunes are pretty hilarious - especially when the serenading cockroaches start kicking in!

The predicament is made more preposterous by the fact that everyone outside the locked bathroom is whole-heartedly chasing after wild leads, and spinning their own imaginative stories out of the case. Director Kang Suk Beom keeps things moving by regularly cutting back and forth between Seung Pil's bathroom break, and Kim Min Sun, Son Chang Min, Kim Roi Ha, and company's much ado about nothing. A packed cast of character actors like Lee Han Wi, Ji Dae Han, Lee Ho Seong, and Lim Dae Ho provide wonderful comedic and investigative support, especially Lee Han Wi as the boorish drunkard.

It's been a while since Lee Bum Soo has taken on a flat-out comedic role like this, and he's as funny as ever playing the agitated goof. I wouldn't mind watching an entire movie of just him trying to break out of the bathroom. The storyline of Where is Jung Seung Pil? is also smarter than most genre efforts, proving to be genuinely engaging and funny as the comedy of errors untangles.

Seung-pil gets all loo-sened up! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
What a to-do for moneyman Seung-pil (Bum Soo Lee). He’s never told his fiancée Mi Seon (Min-Sum Kim) he loves her, is unhappy about her vain indulgences and then, after Seung-pil leaves Mi Seon in their car to buy some cigarettes, finds himself suddenly trapped in a dingy public toilet inside a building about to be levelled by the demolition squad. Trouble is you don’t know how Seung-pil gets trapped there, but between car and public toilet an ‘incident’ happens to Seung-pil to how he gets locked in the loo. Franticly Mi Seon reports Seung-pil’s sudden disappearance to the police where a Detective Kim (Chang-min Son) and his boys try to unravel the mystery. The trouble is the local cop team are as loco as this loo-py plot, including a paranoid cop neurotic about women and money, a narcissistic detective and jealous gung-ho cops, making a missing person search not so very straight forward.

This movie is so daft it should have the daftest daft award for S Korean daft comedies. Again another send up of ‘incompetent’ S Korean cops as they search for the missing Seung-pil (whose only a stones throw from the police station locked in the demolition loo building!). Detective Kim and his cops muddle through a disarray of mis-information reports about Seung-pil either being murdered or abducted, on the run for embezzlement from his company, his fiancée believing Seung-pil is having a secret affair with a woman at his work and Detective Kim’s belief that Mi Seon could have killed her beloved for insurance money. Add a tractor driver to the mix who is arrested after Mi Seon sees him with Seong-pil’s cigarette lighter after his disappearance, but is actually a women's knicker snatcher/wearer, all makes for muddling police reports. Meanwhile, Seung-pil is locked inside the dingy porcelain palace making unheard cries for help and attempting to escape through an air vent and encountering a hoard of rats and their worried droppings getting Jeong-pil in a further messy fettle. For madcap K-comedy this succeeds well with quick fire plot antics and good acting delivery. Where it weakens is you’ll have seen this daftness before. But I had laughs here seeing our own foibles and silly bits through caricatures in a S Korean idiom. There’s even some Stuart Little type CGI effects at the finish with an extraordinary singing rat. Bum Soo and Chang-min perform with Min-sum a good fiery frustrated woman. Sadly this must have been Ja-yeon Jang (Boys Over Flowers) final film.
