Following the critical success of her previous narrative feature Big Blue Lake, which brings her the Best New Director of the 31st Hong Kong Film Award, Jessey Tsang’s latest feature-length documentary, Flowing Stories continues the exploration of her native village, Ho Chung in Sai Kung. “In contrast with political documentaries that stress the preservation of local villages, Flowing Stories is an ode to the land,” said Tsang.

Part of a “Ho Chung Tetralogy” that includes the interactive web piece All About My Ho Chung, the short film The Life and Times of Ho Chung Village and the feature film Big Blue Lake, Flowing Stories is Jessey Tsang Tsui Shan’s first feature-length documentary. Through depicting the recurrent reunions and partings of villagers and the intimate details of their lives, the film examines issues about urban and rural development. Filmed on location in Hong Kong and in various cities in France and Great Britain, Flowing Stories is an ode to village life and a journey in search of Hong Kongers’ collective roots. Tsang’s camera records the beautiful scenery and time-honored customs of a local village, as well as a once-a-decade village festival, which serves as a continuation of a tradition passed down through the generations as well a testament to the loving bonds among family members. In today’s Hong Kong, when people feel they face an uncertain future, the director hopes to review a village’s development and future progress and explore the meaning of home and diasporas through this meaningful local documentary...
