After ceding the top-selling artist spot in
2018,
Arashi reclaimed the throne in 2019. The group's best-of album
5x20 All the BEST!! 1999-2019, which has sold over 2.1 million copies, was well ahead of the pack as our #1 Japanese album. Arashi's
5x20 All the BEST!! CLIPS 1999-2019 was also the #1 J-pop video release, while
Brave was the top single among Japanese artists.
Besides Arashi, other Johnny's artists continued to be popular, with KAT-TUN, Hey! Say! JUMP, NEWS, KinKi Kids, Yamashita Tomohisa, Kamenashi Kazuya and Domoto Tsuyoshi all making the list. Divas are also well represented by Utada Hikaru, Hamasaki Ayumi, Sheena Ringo, Perfume and Daoko, while internationally popular bands One OK Rock and Babymetal's latest albums are in the top ten.
K-pop group Seventeen's Happy Ending was the top-selling Japanese single overall, followed by BTS's Lights/Boy With Luv. NCT 127's Awaken was the best-selling Japanese album for Korean artists (and second overall). Fellow SM Entertainment idols Tae Min and Tae Yeon follow right after with their solo releases.
Twice, GOT7 and BLACKPINK each had two albums in the top ten. Twice also had two top ten singles, and they rose to the second highest-selling artist. IZ*ONE made a strong debut, claiming two top-ten singles and the #9 spot among artists.
The below rankings are based on sales of Japanese-language music on YesAsia.com from January 1 to December 31, 2019.
