Professional Review of "Ultrasound 1997-2003"

First Compilation Ever: "Ultrasound 1997-2003" ~ David Tao

It is well-known that each move for David Tao to release an album can take at least a number of years as he drills and drills for the best possible quality in all the songs that he produces. To everyone's surprise though, David has unexpectedly and astoundingly launched this brand new solo album "Ultrasound 1997-2003" only after exactly one year from the release of "Black Tangerine" (Hei Se Liu Ding).

"Ultrasound 1997-2003" is just a compilation album, but the only four new tunes are as satisfactory as any other previous greatest hits of David's nevertheless. Just as on his last album "Black Tangerine," the King of R&B no longer only concentrates on the most favourite R&Bs, but opens up to singing assorted types of songs. That has definitely opened up a new frontier in his performance career.

The leading track "Shanghaied" (Track#1), which features a special blend of Western & Eastern styles, pictures how lost and dissolute man is nowadays. There is the magic power of the topic, yet the description in the song could have gone further beneath the surface to strengthen it. Still, the present reviewer is convinced that this principle tune is not as quaking as earlier leading tracks such as "Black Tangerine" and "Love Is Simple".

The light-hearted "I Like It" (Track#8) is the commercial theme song of a multi-national fast food chain store. David's passionate and emotionally involved performance in the song deserves respect. "Season of Loneliness" (Track#12) is a cool but touching ballad and the slightly rock-flavoured "Runaway" (Track#15) and "Day After Day (Revised 2003 Version" (Disc#2, Track#1) are also worth sparing your time listening to.

"Ultrasound 1997-2003" is a must-buy for real David Tao fans as the album offers simply the best of the best from the King of R&B through the years. How are you supposed to miss out collecting such classics as "I Love You" (Track#14), "Regular Friends" (Track#3), "Airport" (Track#6), "Melody" (Track#10), "Blue Moon" (Track#5), etc all on just one CD? "Black Tangerine" (Track#13) is the present reviewer's favourite song among the all-star league of Tao's collections. Besides, the reviewer is definite that he shall sing the song whenever he visits Karaoke TV.

The album also comes with a free Disc#2, which offers eight bonus tracks. The present reviewer believes that people are likely to ponder over the songs ' meaning when they listen to the demos and many different versions of David's various previous works, which make up the bonus CD.

Recommendations: "I Like It" (Track#8), "Season of Loneliness" (Track#12), "Runaway" (Track#15), "Black Tangerine" (Track#13)

David's Ultrasound
He has been hailed as the Chinese godfather of R&B and his success along with the frenetic reaction of music lovers everywhere says it all. David Tao simply has that special sound - Ultrasound.

The 38-year-old singer/songwriter no doubt has music in his veins, which may partly be inherited from his father, David Tao (Tao's original name was Anthony, but he changed it to David later on), who also used to be a well-known singer in his younger years. No doubt, David Tao is today a source of pride for his father. Here are a few comments on the material featured on Tao's Ultrasound. Melody comes blowing in as a melancholic ballad reminiscing about opportunities lost in the past, while Shanghaied (CD 1/Track 1) presents a groovy up-tempo tune. The latter revolves around girls and boys reveling beneath the glitter of Shanghai's neon lights with no intentions to go home as the original song title, "Not Going Home Today", implies. I Like It (CD 1/Track 8) involves more positive sounds as Tao sings about the quest for natural simple things that lead to happiness and laughter. Close To You (CD 1/Track 9) drifts down to more romantic levels, unveiling what's on the mind of a lover who longs for his dear one. Finally, there is no way around Tao's standard ballad, that is simply called I Love You (CD 1/Track 14 - the original title literally reads as "Love Is Very Simple"). Amid all its naiveté there are traces of truth to be found in this song about a person's romantic confessions. Even though this song adheres to such old fashioned lines as "The world may keep changing constantly, but if you sincerely try, love becomes easy", Tao has pepped it up with enough good feel and R&B to turn it into a classic worth its replay value.

Overall, this release includes a good number of melodious songs, ranging from rock to R&B and alternative music among other elements, that all blend seamlessly into Tao's specific Ultrasound.

boys & girls we have a hot one here.
Although this album is more like a compilation, but it has something that has never been done before. It has the demo version of David Tao's hit songs. For songwriters, this is a must have CD. Just to hear how a professional writes his songs from scratch. This is an awesome CD to learn from.

Peace Out
