YesAsia Editorial Description

Chow Yun Fat began his acting career in 1973 when he joined TVB, and he first rose to fame with his role as a gangster in the classic TV series The Bund in 1980. He had made a few movies before he collaborated with John Woo in the well-known A Better Tomorrow. After that he worked with Director Ringo Lam in making City on Fire (1987), Prison on Fire (1987), and Prison on Fire II (1991), which are now digitally remastered and packed in a nice boxset for collectors, with bonus interviews with Ringo Lam and a set of bookmarks.

All three films were once box office hits in Hong Kong and Chow even took home the Best Actor awards in the 7th Hong Kong Film Awards for City on Fire. Now when Chow Yun Fat has gone international, it may be time to watch his critically acclaimed cop-and-gangster movies made earlier in his career!

  • City on Fire
Chow is an undercover cop assigned to infiltrate a gang of violent thieves, but his submergence in the criminal underworld takes its toll. Which is more important: justice or honor? His continuing self-torment builds towards an unexpected, explosive climax!

  • Prison on Fire
This time Chow Yun Fat portrays a gambler imprisoned because of killing his wife by accident. He decides to make a fresh start, and even helps another new prisoner (Tony Leung Ka Fai) in adapting to the harsh conditions in prison, and dealing with a corrupted jailer (Roy Cheung).

  • Prison on Fire II
Chow continues to portray a prisoner in the sequel to Prison on Fire. He escapes from prison for just one day to see his son who is now orphaned. Meanwhile, a riot breaks out on the first day of the Lunar New Year, and Chow has no choice but to flee from prison again...

The Apex of Film Restoration Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
The On Fire films to me represent the Apex of what a Great Director like Ringo Lam can do with the Right cast, create a Unique Drama with equally Unique characters (By HK Standards at least). While School on Fire is not included in this great collection (It does not Star CYF, hence it does not appear in the CYF On Fire boxset) The Three Films that are included are some of the best of not just Ringo and CYF Works, but of Asian filmaking in general, and full commendations go to Fortune star for giving these Three Films (Especially the first two, City and Prison on Fire) the treatment they deserve, with some great Box Art and Bookmarks, but all this is secondary to the great amount of digital restoration these films have gone through in both Audio and visual Quality, watching these films even with a Humble 32CM LCD Screen and stereo speakers offers a truly wondrous experience that's even better than when you first saw these films so many years ago...

All in all, this is a boxset not to be missed, get it while you still can, even if it is a little pricey, it's worth every Penny!

Boxset on fire! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
I haven't written a review in my life before but the presentation that Fortune Star has put into this 'On Fire' boxset is second to none.

I've seen the movies countless amounts of times but it was the first time in ages that it gave me goosebumps and a massive smile on my face.

From the shell of the boxset which is actually two parts, the outer skin slides up to reveal the two prominent portraits of Chow Yun Fat (One which is displayed in the image gallery.) It gives a statement of what you are in for.

Inside sitting side by side are the three dvd cases, perfectly presented. Each holding a special gift. Bookmarks with a 'memorable' scene from each movie. Each one with high quality feeling and depth. It was something that I just wanted to show everyone.

Now for the actual dvds themselves, the picture quality and the DTS sound raises the bar from the original soundtracks then leaps over it.

The only reason why I've rated this boxset 9/10 and not 10 is the english subtitles. It just needed to be looked over again just to fix the small but noticable things, sometimes there were wrong translations or the sentence would flash away before you started to read it. Otherwise this would have been easily the number one boxset to get for the next decade.
