YesAsia Editorial Description

The latest adaptation of a hugely popular martial arts novel, starring the hottest actors and actresses in Mainland China, now comes with English Subtitles! With a 120-minute making-of and other features (without subtitles), The Return of the Condor Heroes TV series is contained in a nice boxset.

Jin Yong's (a.k.a. Louis Cha) swordplay novel The Return of the Condor Heroes has been favored by producers and directors for adaptation into TV dramas. Some well-known TV adaptations include the classic Andy Lau and Idy Chan TVB version made in 1983, the 1995 TVB version starring Louis Koo and Carman Lee, and the Taiwanese version featuring Richie Jen and Jacqueline Wu. Now comes a brand new Mainland version with Wang Xiaoming and Liu Yifei, together enacting the forbidden couple in Jin Yong's novel to perfection. The production team claims that the new edition will become the "most fashionable" adaptation of The Return of the Condor Heroes ever.

The Return of the Condor Heroes follows the growth and development of the brave and handsome hero Yang Guo, and focuses on his love for his martial arts teacher, Dragon Girl. Although Yang appears to flirt with girls all the time, his love for Dragon Girl is actually undivided and everlasting. Morals during ancient times forbid a disciple to fall in love with his master, but he does not care how others see him and his love for Dragon Girl remains immovable and unconditional....

Could have been much better Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
First, the upsides. Crystal Liu is superb playing Xiao Long Nue. She can portray the changes excellently from the emotionless or cold Xiao Long Nue into one with emotions and who finally falls in love. The fights are also wonderful and fascinating. Other actors who act very well in my view are Gongsun Zhi and his creepy wife. And the final upside point is that this film follows the novel dliligently, at least 95%. HOWEVER, this is apparently a cut version and the person who did the editing seems to think more about romanticness and less about the coherence of the film. The editor cuts all parts of the time Yang Gor spends in the Plum Blossom Island. So you will be a bit lost several times if you have not read the novel. For instance, how on earth can Yang Gor call Ouyang Feng 'father'? And how can Yang Gor suddenly know a blind man by the name of Uncle Ke of the Seven Freaks from Jiang Nan in the second or third last episode? A few moments of flashbacks in the film certainly do not answer those issues to non-readers. Had the part about Yang Gor's childhood at the Island not deleted, it would have kept the coherence of the film. The editor also cut the epilogue of the story, which is crucial to link to the Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre story. The actor who plays Yang Gor does not play so well, either, which adds onto the downside. I can explain, though, that the novel notes that Yang Gor in the end looks older but Xiao Long Nue remains heavenly beautiful and looks younger than him. We should be more concerned with Ying Gu, who must have found the formula to get rid of her wrinkles in this film. The novel says that she looks like a grandma with white hair, but the film shows a young lady with white hair. A final downside point is the editor's attempt to put a touch at the last episode between Guo Xiang and Rev. Jin Lun - this is the worst part in the film in my view. The idea must have come from a cheap soap opera, which is unfair for this novel of Jin Yong's. Nevertheless, I understand that it is not easy to make a good film out of a good novel. Most parts of the film are made very well, so I still recommend this film, especially because many people including myself consider it as the most beautiful love story.

Must Try Harder Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
First the positives , this production had a strong supporting cast :

Fu Miao as the tragic Gong Sun Lu nice you want her to end up with Yang Guo
Yang Mi as the cute Guo Xiang...a rising star
Kenny Bee as Gong Sun Zhi , ooh .....he's good at being bad
Meng Guang Mei as the jilted and evil Li Mo Chou
Chen Zi Han as the dislikable Guo Fu
Wang Luo Yang as the patriotic Guo Jing
Kong Lin as the clever Huang Rong

Liu Yi Fei as Xaio Long Nu's acting has improved, her fight coreography is great however her voice has been dubbed here but I wouldn't rate her nor Huang Xaio Ming's (Yang Guo) acting as anything but average. And why is Yang Guo's hair dyed ?

The problem is that these two aren't convincing as a couple, they lack that essential chemistry. Fu Miao and Huang Xiao Ming loook more of a couple. When Xaio Long Nu first meets Yang Guo she is 4 years his senior. However in reality Huang Xiao Ming is about 10 years older than Liu Yi Fei.

To make matters worse as the drama continues the make up artist continue to age Huang Xaio Ming until he looks like he's in his forties whislt Liu Yi Fei looks exactly the same. Wang Yuyan may not have discovered Tian Shan Tong Lao's secrets to youth but maybe Xaio Long Nu has.

No doubt this reflected the director's decision to include as much eye candy as possible. There are long scenes in which the camera just lingers over Liu Yi Fei where there's absolutely no dialogue or need for this .....sure she's very beautiful but the camera work looks creepy and obsessive in a stalker sort of way. Was Duan Yu the camera man ?

The production would have done much better had they chosen two stars whose ages were a bit closer. The cool and talented Hu Ge would have made a great Yang Guo, whilst the beautiful and talented Cecelia Liu Shi Shi would have been a superb Xaio Long Nu.

Great story, worth keeping Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
The story is great, and the visuals were fantastic! It's a keeper! The acting was very credible, and the kung fu sequences were graceful and well executed. Not a dull moment. The protagonists made a great looking couple.

Crystal Liu Yifei is a beautiful Dragon Girl Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Be careful as other versions of this DVD boxset that are cheaper actually has scenes cut! The more expensive version put out by Tai Seng will have a different cover art that says UNCUT version. This new version has spectacular scenery, costumes, and fight scenes. The character development and dialogue however was better in the 83 version so it's recommended to watch that to understand the backgrounds and full stories of some of the minor characters. The highlight to this movie without a doubt is Liu Yifei. She is absolutely stunning as Dragon Girl. I find myself fast forwarding fight scenes just to see more of her and Yang Guo. All the scenes with them together are extremely dramatic, almost to the point of making you cry. You'll recognize alot of the music from this series from Inuyasha and other soundtracks. The english subs are pretty decent too. The one biggest disappointment will come all the way at the ending as you'll find it ends very abruptly but other than that, definitely worth the purchase to own this version of part 2 of the Condor Heroes Trilogy.
