YesAsia Editorial Description

Considered by many to be the best Korean drama of all time, revolutionary masterpiece The Eye of Dawn is finally available on DVD with English subtitles! With over 270 actors, almost 30,000 extras, a 7.2 billion won budget, and location shooting in China and the Philippines, The Eye of Dawn is as grand and striking now as it was 15 years ago. In the early 1990s, while the film industry was still going through growing pains, TV dramas were on a roll, recording ratings that would shock most industry insiders today. In 1991, producer Kim Jong Hak and writer Song Ji Na got together for their second collaboration, The Eye of Dawn, and the result is stamped in Korean television history. The acclaimed duo layer went on to rewrite the rules of Korean political dramas in the mid-90s with another masterpiece, Sandglass.

One of the first drama productions to shoot in its entirety before broadcast, The Eye of Dawn is as uniquely Korean as they come when it comes to story. In the uncertain atmosphere of wartorn Korea, three young men find their lives inevitably interwoven at a time when taking sides was the only option. Yeo Wook (Chae Si Ra of Emperor of the Sea) recently joined the volunteer corps, Jang Ha Rim (Park Sang Won of Sandglass) joined the anti-war movement and fell in love with a Japanese woman, and Choi Dae Chi (Choi Jae Sung of Yeon Gaesomun) is a Korean student soldier enlisted in the Japanese Imperial army. Their destinies meet in the most tumultuous period in modern Korean history, from the ideological war of the mid-40s to the bloody battles leading to the Korea War.

Recording ratings of over 50%, The Eye of Dawn went on to win Best Drama and Dae Sang at the Korean Broadcasting Awards, along with an array of awards at the 29th Baeksang Awards, including Best Actress (Chae Si Ra), Best Actor (Choi Jae Sung), Best Special Effects, Best Production, and Best Drama. The Eye of Dawn single-handedly ushered in the era of blockbuster dramas, paving the way for what would become the Golden Age of Korean television. No drama in Korean TV history matches The Eye of Dawn, and no fan should miss this classic must-see drama.

This 10-disc limited edition release of The Eye of Dawn includes the following special features:

    A masterpiece Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Some months ago, I read a comment about Eyes of Dawn - something about it being a classic or must-watch. So when I saw it advertised on Yesasia with English subs (!!), I knew I had to get it. I had no idea of the story but I've always been interested in historical dramas. The first episode surprised me because it dealt with something I had never seen in Korean dramas - comfort women. The scenes were very disturbing but gripping. This was not an easy drama to watch but it was worth every minute of my time. Starting with the Pacific war (1940s) and ending with the Korean War (1950s), the drama follows the lives of three Koreans: a comfort woman (Yeo Ok) and two Korean students (Dae Chi and Ha Rim) who are conscripted against their will into the Japanese Imperial Army. There are scenes of human experiments and tortures; the drama does not try to cloak the atrocities of the war. That's why I say it is not an easy drama to watch. You will witness scenes of great cruelty but also immense courage. The love 'triangle' in the drama is beautiful and so much more meaningful than what I've seen in most Korean dramas. There are many familiar faces in Eyes of Dawn. It is truly an amazing cast. The acting is superb. Although the drama is 'old' (1991), it is way better than recent dramas. I was also pleasantly surprised by the excellent English subtitles. After watching Eyes of Dawn, I have started to read more about Korea's history during World war 2 and the Korean War. The drama not only touched me but it taught me things I had never been aware of before. It is truly a fantastic drama and deserves to be called the best Korean drama of all time!

Amazing! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I've watched many Korean dramas but the Eye of Dawn is simply the best. I could not believe the scale of the drama. It is the most epic I have seen. The cast is huge! Fantastic acting from the leads and many familiar faces. It is not your usual light and happy drama so be warned. There are many disturbing scenes of World War 2, etc. But if you want to see top-notch storytelling and acting, watch it. It is UNFORGETTABLE.
