Superstars Cecilia Cheung and Choi Min Sik turn in fantastic performances in 2001's Failan, a touching romance with a curious twist. Filmmaker Song Hae Sung, director of Calla and Rikidozan, adapts Asada Jiro's novel to the big screen, telling the story of a star-crossed married couple who have never actually met face to face. One half of the story centers on the beautiful Failan (Cecilia Cheung, One Nite in Mongkok) who immigrates to Korea to seek out her only living next of kin after the death of her parents. However, once Failan arrives there, she discovers the disappointing truth - her relatives have since moved to Canada. Hoping to stay in Korea, the young immigrant pays for an arranged paper marriage through a matchmaking service in order to secure a work permit. The other half of the story focuses on Failan's legal spouse: Lee Kang Jae (Choi Min Sik, Old Boy), an aging, penny ante thug living a pointless existence, wishing for nothing more than to return to his beloved hometown, yet finding himself trapped in the dead end world of crime and grime.

With nothing more than a photograph of Kang Jae to go on, Failan often finds herself dreaming of her husband, even going so far to write him letters about how she wishes to see him. Of course, Failan lacks the courage to mail those letters at first. On Kang Jae's side of things, his life comes to a dramatic turning point whenever his boss asks him to take the rap on a murder charge, a crime that carries the penalty of a lengthy stay in jail. While that possibility isn't very appealing, neither is the alternative since displeasing Kang Jae's powerful boss could have fatal results. Amidst all this darkness, it seems that the single ray of hope in the man's life is Failan, the wife he's never had the chance to meet. For his work on Failan, Song Hae Sung picked up the Best Director Prize at the Daejong Film Awards, a well-deserved honor for a filmmaker who has crafted such a masterfully-told, emotionally touching romance.

SYNOPSIS
“뒷골목을 방황하고, 모두에게 호구라 불렸던. 변변찮은 3류 양아치 이강재.
