If you're one of those C-pop lovers who looks over the credits whenever you listen to a song, Terence Lam (Lam Ka Him) would not sound unfamiliar. Pakho Chau's "One Step Closer," JW's breakout hit "Contradictory Life," JW and James Wu's duet "So It's Because We're Deeply in Love," Yoga Lin's "Vulnerable," Joey Yung's "Science of Heart"… These are just some of Terence Lam's long list of credited tracks. The Cantopop songwriter now shows us more of his music talent in his singing debut.
What's so special about Terence Lam is not merely his composing skills, but also his vocal timbre that reminds me of 90s and early 2000s Hong Kong singers. Free of overly polished vocal techniques, his unique, natural tone and very clear enunciation make his storytelling more affecting. Of course, the acclaimed songwriter also composed all of his album tracks.
In January 2020, Terence Lam debuted as an indie singer with his first digital single "NEXT," which peaked at #1 on the 903 chart. I mean, it's another Terence Lam and Albert Leung (Lin Xi) collaboration – what more can you expect? His sentimental vocals, accompanied by the sounds of piano and string instruments, naturally lead listeners down memory lane. The song is sentimental enough to make you look back, but not too overwhelmingly so.
"NEXT" is my favorite from the nine-track album, but the rest of the soothing ballads are certainly worth listening to as well, such as his self-produced piece "Wind" about taking a break and holding on, the slightly upbeat and lighthearted just carry on, and Solitude about enjoying being alone. "In a Funk," another Terence Lam and Albert Leung collab, expresses the bitterness of pretending to be cool even when we're not able to move on from a relationship. In addition to the singles, Major in Minor also comes with four instrumentals that connect the melodies, making the whole album a more complete story.
Major in Minor offers a calm, relaxing ambience that makes you feel as if you're listening to five melodious bedtime stories guiding you on ways to let go and relieve stress. Terence Lam surely knows the way to touch people's hearts with his music pieces.
