Director Shinkai Makoto's 'Weathering With You' has gorgeous animation -- even better than that in 'Your Name'. It has interesting characters and a compelling, if a bit overwrought, story. It has terrific music.
What it lacks is coherence concerning the magic that lies at the story's center -- the oddly rainy weather, the character Hina's ability to control that weather through prayer, the effect that this ability appears to be having upon Hina, the existence of weird fish in the rainy skies, the apparent existence of green worlds atop the clouds, etc. I'm not looking for these things to make scientific sense (which they obviously do not), but there should be some coherent logic to them. And there isn't any. Watch 'Weathering With You' for the intriguing characters and splendid animation. Just don't spend a lot of time trying to make sense of it. |
