Soi Cheang's grisly and gritty crime thriller Limbo has picked up scores of accolades including Best Film at the 28th Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards, Best Screenplay and Art Direction at the 40th Hong Kong Film Awards, and Best Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Visual Effects and Art Direction at the 59th Golden Horse Film Awards. The visceral black-and-white neo-noir, which premiered at the 71st Berlin International Film Festival, is based on the story Wisdom Teeth by mystery writer and criminal psychology expert Lei Mi, who is known for the Criminal Minds series. Gordon Lam (Hand Rolled Cigarette) and Mason Lee (Who Killed Cock Robin) form a veteran-rookie duo of troubled cops investigating a serial murder case. Cya Liu (I'm livin' it) co-stars as an unpredictable informant in a breakout performance that won her Best Actress from the Hong Kong Film Awards and Hong Kong Film Critics Society. Japanese actor Ikeuchi Hiroyuki (Ip Man) and Fish Liew (Anita) also appear in the acclaimed film that presents a psychologically unsettling yet aesthetically stunning vision of Hong Kong's sordid underbelly.
Police academy graduate Will Ren (Mason Lee) is partnered up with recently reinstated veteran Cham Lau (Gordon Lam) to investigate a serial murder case that has them searching through trash dumps for body parts. While investigating, the angry and bitter Cham re-encounters Wong To (Cya Liu), the juvenile addict who caused an accident that destroyed his family. He violently takes out his rage on the young woman, who desperately tries to atone for her sins by becoming an informant. Cham uses Wong To to find the serial killer, but his actions trigger a series of escalating events with devastating consequences.
