Kitano Takeshi returns to the director's chair for Kubi, his first film since 2017's Outrage Coda and first samurai film since 2003's Zatoichi. Adapting his own novel Kubi, Kitano writes, produces, directs and stars in the historical samurai epic based on the Honno-ji incident during the Sengoku period. Kitano gives his own intriguing and subversive spin to Sengoku lore, exploring the bloody conflicts, complex machinations and queer relationships of the samurai world that lead to Akechi Mitsuhide's fateful betrayal of Oda Nobunaga at Honno-ji Temple.

Kubi's violent and sprawling world of historical figures is filled by an equally sprawling lineup of actors. Kitano Takeshi stars as Toyotomi Hideyoshi, while Kase Ryo plays Oda Nobunaga and Nishijima Hidetoshi plays Akechi Mitsuhide. Also in the cast are Asano Tadanobu, Shido Nakamura, Omori Nao, Endo Kenichi, Terajima Susumu, Kiritani Kenta and Kobayashi Kaoru. Kubi made its world premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival.

Oda Nobunaga (Kase Ryo), who aims to unify the country, is engaged in fierce battles from all sides. In the midst of these battles, Nobunaga's vassal Murashige (Endo Kenichi) revolts and disappears. Nobunaga gathers his vassals, including Hashiba Hideyoshi (Kitano Takeshi) and Akechi Mitsuhide (Nishijima Hidetoshi), and orders them to search for Murashige, with the promise of inheriting his position. Murashige is captured by Hideyoshi's younger brother Hidenaga (Omori Nao) and military commander Kuroda Kanbei (Asano Tadanobu), and handed over to Mitsuhide. However, Mitsuhide hides Murashige instead of killing him. A frustrated Nobunaga begins to turn his suspicions in an unexpected direction as he steps into a trap. Who is the mastermind behind it all?

【ストーリー】
天下統一を掲げる織田信長は、毛利軍、武田軍、上杉軍、京都の寺社勢力と激しい戦いを繰り広げていたが、その最中、信長の家臣・荒木村重が反乱を起こし姿を消す。
