YesAsia Editorial Description

Donnie Yen is the lethal weapon in 14 Blades, the stylish wuxia film from acclaimed action movie master Daniel Lee (Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon) about Jinyiwei, the feared secret agents of the imperial court in ancient China who were famously clad in brocade costumes. There's probably no better choice than Yen for the headlining role of a hunted Jinyiwei commander, as the film offers plenty of opportunities for the martial arts superstar to flex his muscles. Further boosting the film's appeal are his attractive co-stars including Mainland actress Vicki Zhao (Red Cliff), Taiwan pop idol Wu Chun of Fahrenheit (Butterfly Lovers), Hong Kong Film Awards Best New Performer Kate Tsui (Eye in the Sky), and Singaporean actor Qi Yuwu (Painted Skin). Kung fu legend Sammo Hung, Shaw Brothers star Chen Kuan Tai, and veteran Hong Kong actors Wu Ma, Law Ka Ying, and Damian Lau round out the star-studded cast. Nominated for Best Action Choreography and Best Sound Design at the 29th Hong Kong Film Awards, 14 Blades was the top-grossing Chinese blockbuster during the 2010 Chinese New Year holidays.

In the final years of Ming dynasty, the Jinyiwei has come under the control of power-hungry eunuch Jia Jingzhong. Secretly conspiring with an exiled prince (Sammu Hung) to rebel against the emperor, the corrupt eunuch frames the Jinyiwei captain Qinglong (Donnie Yen) for treason and orders his death. With his fellow Jinyiwei agents, and the deadly assassin Tuotuo (Kate Tsui) after him, the beleaguered fugitive fights his way out and is joined on his run by Qiao Hua (Vicki Zhao), the daughter of a security agency leader. Together, they set out to stop Jia's conspiracy with help from a powerful bandit king (Wu Chun).

KEY POINT / PRODUCTION NOTE

Professional Review of "14 Blades (DVD) (Korea Version)"

May 15, 2010

This professional review refers to 14 Blades (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)
Action megastar Donnie Yen adds yet another notch to his ever growing belt with 14 Blades, the latest wuxia epic from director Daniel Lee, recently responsible for another period set blockbuster in Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon. In addition to Yen, the film has a mightily impressive supporting cast that includes Vicki Zhao (Red Cliff), Taiwanese pop idol Wu Chun (Butterfly Lovers), Kate Tsui (recent winner of Best New Performer at the Hong Kong Film Awards for the Milkyway production Eye in the Sky, and Singaporean actor Qi Yuwu (Painted Skin, with special appearances from genre legends Sammo Hung, Wu Ma and Shaw Brothers favourite Chen Kuan Tai. The film was a smash hit with both the public and the critics, being the top grossing film of the 2010 Chinese New Year holidays, and being nominated for Best Action Choreography and Best Sound Design at the 29th Hong Kong Film Awards.

Set towards the end of the Ming Dynasty, the film revolves around the Jinyiwei, specially trained warriors who served as enforcers and secret police for the imperial court. Yen stars in the lead role as their current captain, taking the name Qinglong in defence of the realm and using the titular box of blades which serve as weapons, instruments of interrogation, grappling hooks and other gadgets. Despite his unflinching loyalty, he is framed by the evil eunuch Jia Jingzhong as part of a plot to help an exiled prince (Sammo Hung) seize power. Hunted by his own men, not to mention a mysterious assassin called Tuotuo (Kate Tsui), he joins forces with a security company and a desert bandit (Wu Chun) to try and clear his name and thwart the conspiracy.

14 Blades is a marked improvement over Daniel Lee's enjoyable though slight Three Kingdoms, being much more focused and benefitting from a look which is both stylish and gritty. Lee makes good use of the gorgeous Chinese scenery, and to an extent the film functions as a road movie, with Yen and co travelling through cities, misty forests and eventually the desert, taking on an almost Dragon Gate Inn feel in its later stages, which is no bad thing. This having been said, during the battle heavy final act, Lee's direction is actually quite reminiscent of recent Hollywood Middle East set war films, with plenty of shaky camera work, aerial shots and sudden explosions. All of this works quite well, and the film is a rare example of a modern genre production which manages to combine occasional flashes of CGI and fantasy elements along with more old school fight choreography and action. This helps to keep it grounded, and gives its plentiful martial arts and grand battle scenes much more of an impact that in other recent films such as Storm Warriors.

Although the plot itself is nothing new it still manages to engage, mainly since the amusingly coiffured Yen is on good form, getting involved in an impressive number of fights and having lots of opportunities to show off his lightening fast skills. His final duel with Kate Tsui's odd, vaguely supernatural killer is probably the film's standout scene, with the actress even managing to add a little depth and sympathy to what could easily have been a one note role. Although Vicki Zhao is criminally underused (sadly something which is becoming a bit of a trend), she again proves that she is pretty much impossible to dislike in any film, and her scenes with Yen help by adding a few light touches, if perhaps not any real emotional depth.

The cast certainly do give the proceedings a boost, and lift 14 Blades to being one of the better of the recent wave of big budget wuxia outings. Donnie Yen really seems incapable of doing any wrong, and shows real star quality in the lead, while Daniel Lee ups his game and manages to avoid most of the pitfalls of other similarly themed CGI overloads, serving up a good mixture of martial arts, battle scenes and epic vistas.

Donnie Yen scores again! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Set during the moribund final years of the Ming dynasty, during which the emperor is more interested in debauchery than matters of state, "14 Blades" tells of one brave man's efforts to save the empire. Astonishingly buff Donnie Yen plays General Qinglong, the leader of the Jinyiwei, a security force set up outside the official structures of the state with the sole purpose of defending the emperor. Evil eunuch Jia Jingzhong (Law Kar-Ying) has aligned with exiled Prince Qing (Sammo Hung) to seize control of the country. The dastardly eunuch frames noble Qinglong for treason, while Prince Qing sends mysterious Tuotuo (Kate Tsui) to assassinate our hero.

The big-picture schemes can be hard to decipher, but the film soon focusses on Qinglong's attempts to escape his pursuers and uphold the honor of the Jinyiwei by defending the emperor. He is aided in those efforts by kindly Qiao Yung (Wu Ma), who owns a company that provides security to travelers, and by Qiao Yung's brave daughter Qiao Hua (Zhao Wei). It's a treat to see Wu Ma, no one's idea of an action hero, slinging a sword with the best of them. Also interjecting himself into the the action is bandit king Judge (Wu Chun). The action flows seamlessly, complemented nicely by the growing affection between Qinglong and Qiao Hua. The thrilling climax arrives with a showdown between Qinglong and the lethal Tuotuo, a battle in which CG effects contrive to make the action look both gorgeous and deadly.

Donnie Yen, lugging his '14 blades' weapon (a bit like a gigantic Swiss Army knife minus the can opener), effectively conveys his character's iron-willed loyalty, while also allowing Qinglong to soften and embrace Qiao Hua's love. Zhao Wei carries off this latest variation on her "Princess Pearl" character with aplomb. For me, the only false note was the casting of Wu Chun as a bandit king; he's a tad too pretty for that role. Action fans will find "14 Blades" to be sheer bliss.

Great weapons Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
14 Blades is not a bad movie. It is a traditional martial arts thriller beefed up by amazing locations and weaponary. The fight scenes in this one are done well. But my only downside with the film was the fact that I did not get fully sinked in to the story and character.

Awesome film 14 Blades Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Wow, great film, good costume, decent cast, solid plot. Donnie Yen delivered yet another solid performance in this film with respect to both acting and action. He trained extensively for the opening tatoo scene which of course was appreciated by many I'm sure. Donnie's portayal of a broken man trying to find truth and justice was brilliantly done. The bit of 'love' he showed towards Zhao Wei's character was just enough to give the audience a heartache. The action was superbly choreographed. Loved all the flying knives and blades. Wu Jun was not bad as the bandit. Zhao Wei was excellent as usual. Great cameo of Sammo, though I'd like to see more of him in the film. All in all, great film. I'm surprised this film did not do as well at the box office.

daniel lee improves is directional skills. Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
with each outing the director, daniel lee seems to improve; gone are his overly used shaky cams, extremely fast editing and uneven pacing. here we get to see a well put together story featuring one mans redemption of dignity with some good old martial arts thrown in along side it.

donnie yen gives a restrained performance and is in top form. vicki zhao is excellent; her eyes are really expressive and her delivery is spot on. unfortunately wu chun and kate tsui have little to offer in there respective roles, their characters are really under developed so there motivations are not quite clear. sammo hung makes a welcome non fighting cameo. other cameos include wu ma and fung hak on.

the fight scenes are plenty here and fortunately the shaky camera has been ditched, though fast editing is still present it is not as overly abused as his previous efforts. a minor gripe is that the fight scenes are rather short but that is compensated by great choreography. fights are evenly interspersed through out and are quite varied in styles, quite a bit of wire work is used.

the story is not too original but features archetype characters that the audience can relate to.

if you were skeptical about daniel lee's effort then rest assured he has actually delivered a reasonable piece here.

entertaining Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
An enjoyable film, although the plot was at times hard to follow. Donnie yen and zhao wei make a good team as proved by the excellent PAINTED SKIN. The disc does suffer from some edge enhancement but it does not detract from what is otherwise a good transfer. Sound was of a high standard and i listened to the 7.1 uncompressed track.
