YesAsia Editorial Description
In 3-iron Jae Hee portrays a jobless bum that gets around by living in houses that have been left empty by their owners. He follows the strong principle of only pleasing his essential needs, i.e., food and lodging and even helps out as a house-man when things need to be repaired. During one of his break-ins he runs into the desperate wife whom he helps to escape from the clutches of her strictly career-minded husband. Soon the husband discovers that his wife is missing and tries to get back what he believes rightly belongs to him.
Kim Ki-duk, whose movies including The Isle, Birdcage Inn and Bad Guy mostly revolve around the topics of lust and violence, was honored with the Silver Lion at the 61st Venice Film Festival for his superb directing efforts. He excels in offering scenes almost free of any dialogue that live solely from the expressions of the involved artists. In 3-iron's final scenarios for example the leading actress only utters the words "Let's eat" and "I love you". As lead actress Lee Seung-yeon was overshadowed by the scandal press from an earlier movie, the forecast for 3-iron's box-office results was not at all optimistic. However, the film's good reviews as well as the award it harvested in Venice have more than restored Lee's status as actress.

Kim Ki Duk is quite a genius. After a few films characterized by their violence and/or erotics, he came up with a film that was on surface clam and quiet - I mean, literally quiet - but radiated a vibrant creativity in exploring his usual motif of love and desire. 3-Iron, made in 2004, fascinated me with its playfulness in articulating a ironically reversed logic between conversation and communication. Communication requires no talking, while speaking doesn't necessarily communicate. Simple as this might seem, Kim Ki Duk has the talent to translate such a lesson into a witty visual piece that is as much entertaining as inspiring. The character played by Jae Hee (who won the Best New Artist at Blue Dragon Awards for this film) is perhaps the most interesting. He sneaks into people's apartments, only taking food to fulfill his basic physical needs, but then completes all the housework and even fixes the broken stuff for them. His desire for a unique form of one-way communication metamorphoses (or sublimes?) from such unusual or even freakish acts of breaking into empty apartments to become weightless and invisible. He remains absolutely silent and never utters a word throughout the entire film. Yet he and Lee Seung Yeon's character have achieved, oxymoronically enough, a perfect speechless dialogue, in contrast to her husband's endless talking which never communicates. I really appreciate Kim Ki Duk's design of Jae Hee's character, whose absolute silence attains a rare cinematic playfulness. Telling a profound story without relying on linguistic conversation requires a good grasp of the cinematic language. Kim Ki Duk not only did it, but also did it wittily. |

I avoided this film for the longest time because the idea of breaking into people's homes just bother me a lot. I'm very glad that I watched it. The film is simple, bizarre and surrealistic at times, but the loneliness, emotional neglects and abuses in society are all too real. The ending and the one sentence commentary is a surprise. It sets Kim Ki Duk apart. I think that he is a great director with substance. I have high respect for him. Both Jae Hee and the very pretty Lee Seung Yeon did an excellent job and they were well suited for this film. The video quality is very good. It's highly recommended! |

"3-Iron" tells of a battered wife married to a brutal and thoroughly selfish husband and of a seemingly aimless young man who breaks into homes only to live in them, not to steal anything (other than the food he eats). The young man breaks into the battered wife's home and, after he is kind to her, they strike up one of the most unusual friendships in film history. Perhaps afraid to spoil this weird kinship they share with a jarring note, they remain silent with each other.
Eventually they are caught for trespassing in someone's home. The wife is returned to her husband. Will the relationship with the young man now come to an end? How "3-Iron" answers this question takes on an almost mystical quality that turns the movie into something akin to an allegorical folk tale. Not everything works in this film, but I must give director Kim major kudos for following the audacity of his unique vision, for shying away from what in other hands might have become prurient, and for creating a beautiful tale of two wounded people reaching out to each other. Very highly recommended. |

OK but......
I get it, the movie is taking risks and artistically it is interesting but unless you are going into with this in mind, the entertainment value is not that high. It is quite frustrating that the two main characters do not talk in the entire movie. Which is fine, but there is no explanation as to why. Why are they breaking into people's houses and doing good deeds. Is he a hallucination she has created, it seems to be the case. I felt the movie was a bit slow and a bit boring but that was just me. I realize it has gotten stellar reviews so if you are intrigued by unique and artistic storylines then this one will suit you just fine. |

I DO LIKE JAE HEE'S ACTING. ITS TO TOO HARD TO ACT WITHOUT SAYING A SINGLE WORD...AS IN. MAYBE THAT'S WHY HE WON THE BEST NEW ACTOR. DIFFICULT TO CONVEY A MESSAGE IF YOUR FACIAL EXPRESSION IS NOT GOOD, KUDOS FOR JAE HEE. LOVE THIS MOVIE, DIFFERENT FROM CHUNYANG. MORE MOVIES FOR HIM, PLEASE |

i bought this video when it came out in 04 and had mixed feeling about it. it was vague at the ending but well done and very beaultiful in the portraying of the charactors feelings. i lent it to a friend and never got it back. i saw it in the foreign movie section and deicided to see it again. this is definately a see again movie. you will get more out of the next time you see it no matter how many times that is. it is open to your own interpretation and imagination which may change how you think of it the next time you see it. it is so complex and expresses so mush without words. i am definately going to buy it again. the actors were perfect for each other and their roles. it is not for everyones taste but if you like it, you will love it. |
