YesAsia Editorial Description

Like the other Huangmei Operas such as The Love Eterne, Ho Meng Hua and Chen Yu Hsien's charming musical, A Maid in Heaven, features female actors in both the male and female roles! In this case, the female-to-male cross-dresser is Ivy Ling Bor, who plays Tong Yong, a mortal man who becomes the object of a goddess' affections. Fong Ying plays the youngest daughter of the Jade Emperor, who falls for Tong Yong and uses her connections as a deity to marry him. Based on a popular Chinese folktale, A Maid in Heaven is a Huangmei Opera told in the sumptuous Shaw Brothers tradition. Romantic interludes, charismatic stars, fabulous sets, beautiful costumes, and above all the charming Mandarin songs make A Maid in Heaven a delightful example of this bygone Hong Kong Cinema genre.

Simply Splendid! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
There were two other versions of this movie but I find this one is the best.

Ivy Ling Po and Fang Yin are delightful to watch. The songs are lovely.

A must for your huangmei diao collection.

Seven Heavenly Maidens Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
A Maid from heaven is a beautiful film. The scenery/costumes/characters are gorgeous. The music is beautiful, too. I like the beginning part BEST when all the maids in heaven sing/dance. and the middle part BEST when all the maids came down to earth to do needlework. But I don't like at the end because it is very sad. the two couple went in different way.

Well Done, Ivy Ling Po! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Considering this is Ivy's 2nd Shaws' movie, I think she did very well. She's charismatic and remarkable in her role as Tong Yong esp of the scenes at the proposal and wedding performed by the Earth God.A multi-talented actress who always strives to give her audience the best shot! Well done Ivy! Fony Ying looks a bit "green" in this movie, may be it's her debut. Well, one has to start somewhere sometime, and generally speaking, she's not bad in her acting. The Huangmei songs are fabulous and romantic and who could beat the unique voice of Ivy Ling Po?

A Maid From Heaven-CHARMED! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
"A Maid From Heaven" is a very delightful, sweet and charming movie! I enjoyed the metaphysical aspects, like the local Earth God. It doesn't have the grandeur of "The Love Eterne." However, it is a little jewel that shines brightly! I was very charmed by this movie.

A maid from heaven Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
Ivy Ling Po maintained her usual standard in this movie; as for Fang Ying, she was quite rigid in her acting. The songs sung are not appealing as the other Shaw Classics " Kingdom and Beauty" or " Love Eterne". Anyway, for those "Huang Mei" fans, this movie is still worthy watching.
