YesAsia Editorial Description

After directing the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Zhang Yimou returns to filmmaking with this remake of the Coen Brothers' Blood Simple. Instead of a direct remake, Zhang transports the film back in time to a remote town in the middle of a desert in China. He also puts together an unusual cast featuring emerging comedy star Xiao Shenyang, Yan Ni (Cow), and a brilliantly deadpan Sun Honglei (Forever Enthralled). The result is a visually arresting dark comedy that effortlessly moves between over-the-top Chinese humor and suspenseful moments that put millions of Chinese audiences at the edge of their seats.

Wang (Ni Dahong) runs an isolated noodle shop in the middle of the desert. His wife (Yan Ni) is miserable in her marriage, and she has turned to having an affair with restaurant employee Li (Xiao Shenyang). Looking for a way to get out of her marriage, she buys a gun from a traveling merchant. However, the two lovers have no idea that Wang has been suspecting them all along. One day, he hires corrupt policeman Zhang (Sun Honglei) to investigate, though the policeman does so with his own motives. Meanwhile, two other disgruntled employees of the restaurant Zhao Liu and Chen Qi are planning to get their unpaid wages from Wang, but they unwittingly put themselves in the middle of the messy situation between their boss, his wife, and her gun.
