"Hyaku-nen saki mo ai wo chikau yo..."
If you're an Arashi fan, these words will not be unfamiliar to you. This exceedingly recognizable line of lyrics is from the group's 2008 mega-hit, One Love. The theme song of the film Hana Yori Dango Final starring member Matsumoto Jun, the release went on to become Japan's second highest-selling single of 2008 (the first was, of course, Arashi's truth / Kaze no Mukou e). Being Arashi's first wedding-themed track, it's no surprise that One Love has become a fixture at Japanese weddings, earning titles like "Song I Most Want to Hear at a Wedding" (Count Down TV) and "Top Wedding Staple" (Oricon) in various rankings. Seven years later, the group looks to add another track to wedding playlists with its latest single Ai wo Sakebe.
This time around, Arashi takes a slightly different route than they did with One Love. Whereas the former single was dramatically, almost hopelessly romantic, Ai wo Sakebe takes a more lighthearted approach. A relentlessly upbeat clap-along pop-rock track with doo-wop influences, it'll have you singing "Kono I-I-I-I-I love you wo/Shinai-ai-ai naru hito ni" before your first listen is through. Reminiscent of many a high-tempo Western wedding staple, it's the kind of instantly catchy romantic song that wouldn't feel out of place on the Love Actually soundtrack.
Following the title track is Yume ni Kakeru, a high-tempo power ballad-type song akin to To Be Free and Your Eyes. With a catchy melody and effective backing strings, it's a B-side that has high potential to become a concert favorite. The single wraps up with another winner in Mr.Lonely, a dance track that's a mixture of the contemporary Arashi sound and the group's early offerings.
Not to be missed is Ai wo Sakebe's adorable music video, which features choreography that's as silly as it is endearing. In the video, the group crashes a real Tokyo wedding and teaches the groom and the groomsmen the dance, and gives the bride and her friends a most welcome surprise wedding present by joining in the groom's dance.
