YesAsia Editorial Description
As the title suggests, the film centers on the story of Ah Long, played by charismatic Hong Kong actor Chow Yun Fat who captured the Best Actor statuette at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 1990 for this title. He plays a construction driver who moonlights as a motorcycle racer. He was once imprisoned precisely because of illegal motorcycle racing, leading to his separation from his beloved Ah Kar. Sylvia Chang, also scriptwriter of this film, received a Best Actress nomination at the Hong Kong Film Awards for her performance as Ah Kar. She gave birth to Ah Long's son when he was in jail, but her mother sent the baby to an orphanage and told Ah Kar that the baby died. Ah Long took his son back from the orphanage and brought him up alone. Ten years later, Ah Long comes across Ah Kar again, but will this reunion bring them happiness?

Professional Review of "All About Ah Long (1989) (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)"
This professional review refers to All About Ah Long (Taiwan Version)
Hong Kong classic All About Ah Long was originally released back in 1990, when it was hugely popular with audiences and critics alike, winning the Best Actor prize for a young Chow Yun Fat at the Hong Kong Film Awards. The film marks a rather different effort from director Johnnie To, which sees him tackling heartfelt family drama rather than the explosive action and triad thrillers (Election, PTU) for which he would later become known. At the heart of the film is the relationship between the titular Ah Long (Chow Yun Fat) and his young son Porky (Huang Kun Hsuan), who live together in Ah Long's rather squalid apartment. Ah Long works on a construction site, having given up motorbike racing after crashing and injuring his leg. However, the job doesn't bring in much money, and so one day he sends Porky to audition for a role in a commercial. Little does he know, the director is in fact Sylvia (actress and screenwriter Sylvia Chang, who has starred in many other Hong Kong classics, such as the Aces Go Places series, and directed the likes of 20 30 40 and Princess D), his estranged girlfriend whom he has not seen since he being sent to jail 10 years ago. Unbeknownst to Sylvia, Porky is in fact her son whom she was told died at birth, and she finds herself having to come to terms not only with him, but with Ah Long, especially in the light of her impending return to the U.S. To's direction is tight, and despite the fact that the film covers a lot of emotional ground and character development, All About Ah Long progresses convincingly and smoothly. Similarly, although the central conceit of a woman unaware that she has a son may seem somewhat far-fetched, it is dealt with in a believable manner without dwelling pointlessly on who is to blame for the deception. Indeed, the film as a whole enjoys an air of realism and, as a result, it is far more than either a melodramatic custody struggle or a simple tale of a man's quest for redemption. The film is frequently amusing, though not intrusively so, and this lighthearted approach works very well, helping both to endear the characters to the viewer and to make the proceedings engaging in a wonderfully entertaining fashion. The main characters are all well drawn and given an uncommon level of depth. To does not shy away from showing their faults as well as merits, especially and crucially in the case of Ah Long, who is shown in flashbacks to have been a genuinely nasty piece of work. As a result, the viewer genuinely cares for him, Sylvia, and young Porky, and the film shows a heartfelt sense of honesty throughout which is impossible not to be moved by. Although the plot does become somewhat predictable in its later stages, by this time the viewer has been drawn into the story and the fates of the characters to such an extent that this is barely noticeable and does not detract at all from its considerable impact. The film is anchored by a marvelous performance from Chow Yun Fat, his role here being completely different than his usual suave charmers, though he does have a few opportunities to flash his trademark charismatic grin. The actor shows his great versatility, and the film serves as an excellent reminder that he is capable of far more than simply playing immaculately dressed killers. Young Huang Kun Hsuan is similarly impressive as Porky, a role that won him the Best Supporting Actor award at the 34th Asian Pacific Film Festival. As for Sylvia Chang, who garnered a Hong Kong Film Award Best Actress nomination for her performance as the torn Sylvia, her moving turn ensures that the viewer never sides wholly with Ah Long. All About Ah Long is firmly rooted in the eighties, from the bouncy synth music to Chow Yun Fat's wild bouffant, which resembles that of Jackie Chan in Drunken Master (it should be noted that his is by no means the most ridiculous coif on show, with that honour going to Sylvia's assistant Peter who sports a bizarre female mullet). This gives the film a pleasantly nostalgic feel without being heavy handed, as well as adding a sense of time and place that further grounds the characters and underlines the basic humanity driving the story. It is this that truly captivates the viewer and makes the film an entertaining and moving classic that should be enjoyed by all viewers. by James Mudge - BeyondHollywood.com |

This was a great mini drama of a bond between father & son as well as how the love between a parent/child goes beyond income status. The movie moves along wonderfully with a balance of comedic inserts, dramatic flashbacks & insightful moments with touching soundtrack. Unfortunately the conclusion of the story doesn't quite fit realistically but I guess makes it memorable since a realistic ending probably wouldn't be climactic enough for a movie. Picture remains clear with, clear subtitles as well. |

Thoughtful & well-acted drama
This film captures Johnnie To, Chow Yun Fat, and Sylvia Chang at important points in their careers. Mr. To was just emerging as an important director, Chow was becoming a preeminent leading man, and Chang was beginning to tackle the behind-the-scenes stuff for which she now is known. This convergence of talents produced an effective melodrama about two adults grappling with the consequences of their long-lost love.
Chow, Chang, and the child actor who plays their son all are brilliant in their roles. Chow appears to be a man frozen in time, still wearing the hair and clothes that were popular ten years earlier when Chang left him. Chang has become a more superficial professional woman. We see them grow and change through the course of this movie; it is a pleasure to see these two skilled actors give such unsparing performances. In the interview with producer Raymond Chow that is a part of this DVD, Mr. Chow says that the motorcycle racing scene at the end of the movie was inserted because Hong Kong viewers would demand to see action in a Chow Yun Fat movie. Unlike other reviewers posting here, I believe that this decision was unfortunate because it brings the movie to a forced and very manipulative conclusion. Apart from this caveat, I highly recommend this movie. |

All About Ah-Long is a well crafted drama, it alternates funny moments to very sad ones. The acting is gorgeous, both Chow Yun Fat and Sylvia Chang are outstanding, one of the best couple of lovers I've ever seen. The little Porky were also good, a pity that he doesn't found a bright future in cinematography. Johnny To is (once again) very skillful in not exceeding in both side of the charming story between the lovers, no cheesy moments nor too unbelievable plot twists. The ending is simply outstanding and one of the most dramatic I've ever seen. That's a great example of what are Hong Kong dramas and a very good effort from one of the most prolific HK directors ever. See it! |

You've seen him as an action hero. But the guy can totally play other roles such as dramas (this movie)and comedies (diary of a big man). This was a very good chick flick. So guys, you'll have girls crying in your arms in no time. And what can I say, Chow Yun Fat is a pimp. |
