YesAsia Editorial Description

Directed by Lee Yong Joo (Possessed), Architecture 101 turned into one of Korea's biggest movies of 2012 with its gently nostalgic story of first love revisited. Han Ga In (The Classic) and Uhm Tae Woong (SIU) star as the college sweethearts who cross paths again years later. The film alternates between the protagonists' present-day reencounter and memories of ambiguous puppy love back in the nineties. The younger counterparts are played by two of last year's breakout young stars, Lee Je Hoon (Bleak Night, Front Line) and miss A member Bae Suzy (Dream High). Selling over four million tickets, Architecture 101 was such a big hit, it even inspired a nineties nostalgia trend in Korea.

Architect Seung Min (Uhm Tae Woong) gets an unexpected visit one day by Seo Yeon (Han Ga In), his first love whom he hasn't seen in many years. Seo Yeon came by especially to ask him to redesign her home in Jeju, and she won't take no for an answer. The two first met 15 years ago in Architecture 101, back when Seung Min (Lee Je Hoon) was a naive university student smitten with headstrong Seo Yeon (Suzy). Both then and now, the two friends grow closer and closer even as life's crossroads pull them in different directions.

Architect of First Love Pain (A) Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Hard working architect Seung-min (Tae-woong Uhm) is one day propositioned by Seo-yeon (Ga-in Han) to design and re-build her a large house to replace a derelict home on the coastal edge of Jeju island. A place Seo-yeon desires as a final resting home for her hospitalised and terminally sick father. But Seo-yeon is also the long lost first love of Seung-min from both of their university days. At first Seung-min is reluctant to take on Seo-yeon’s project, but with approval from his hierarchical superiors, Seung-min gets the go ahead to design Seo-yeon’s home. But with Seung-min himself weeks away from getting married to a woman he works with, he remains unwilling to help Seo-yeon. This main reluctance relates to Seung-min’s deja vu feelings towards Seo-yeon and the heartbreak he experienced in his student days. Seung-min had loved Seo-yeon too much and found himself torn by a cruel misunderstanding of fate. In youth Seo-yeon was always determined to live in a big two-story dream house and have two children and a dog. Then Seung-min imagined he could design and build Seo-yeon’s dream home and even had created a prototype model. As Seo-yeon shared her favourite song with him, by splitting her headphones, Seung-min felt maybe love between them could blossom. But Seo-yeon’s dream didn’t totally suggest to Seung-min that her shared life would be with him. After all, Seo-yeon had feelings for Jea-wook (Yeon-seok Yoo) an architect major in Seung-min’s study class and although studying music, Seo-yeon joined the architect study to be in the same class as Jea-wook.

Coincidentally Seung-min shared student digs with Jea-wook and began to learn that he also had interests in Seo-yeon. Seung-min though often talked with his long time school friend (Jeong-seok Jo), a cool dude with plenty of dating ‘advice’ (generally eccentric scenarios on how Seung-min could ‘woo’ Seo-yeon’s heart). Seo-yeon though did share ‘possibility’ days with Seung-min, like when she asked him to visit her new student digs, on her November birthday when both walked on railway lines, where Seo-yeon first told Seung-min of her dream home. Even agreeing to both meet again on 1st day of snow. But Seung-min considered her ambitions met more with Jea-wook’s architectural talent and character calibre, but Seung-min still wished to design Seo-yeon’s dream house; his model a secret expression of love. Now 15 years on, Seo-yeon returns to Seung-min’s life and past hurtful memories flood back.

Architect of First Love Pain (B) Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
First love heartbreak isn’t as nasty as having a tooth pulled, but not far off, and I’d hope most wouldn’t need to suffer “Architecture 101” teen love angst. Love and dating is supposed to be bliss, and it really is, albeit in a parallel world. But here on planet earth 101 it’s stymied by immense social complexity, personal desire and hierarchical aspiration. Not to mention a guy needing a healthy bank account to buy his lady 1,001 pair of shoes as well as a big cushty house to make even Lara Croft jealous. Anyway, although I anticipated by the 101 part of the title, a mysterious symbolic sacred architecture aspect, “Architecture 101” is totally a story about reminiscing of first love and heartbreak. So no Captain Scarlet and the Mysterones ‘Crater 101’ here, I’m afraid...lol. Architectural building plan blueprints and job done isn’t exactly the importance of this movie either, as mending deep and sweetly painful first love heartbreak is beyond materialism. The student flashback roles are played well by Je-hoon and Suzy of Miss A/Dream High. But both sets of roles convey well painful separation (Tae-woong and Ga-in thumby uppy, too), but the student flashbacks show the crucial interplay between Seung-min and Seo-yeon; how they first met, got to know each other, date, first crafty kiss and befallen to that old ‘mountain out of a mole hill’ heartbreak scenario (or satellite station out of a look out tower, for architectural difference), as parallel times and love hurt circumstance collide.

“Architecture 101” relates excellently to first date romance. Setting hearts too high on separate levels (a dream home and a dream girl) and any fella watching this who ever dated a girl and wondered how that girl felt about him, will feel quivery emo, especially to Seung-min and Seo-yeon’s rail line walk and secret ‘kiss’. This is more than anything a sweetly sad love story of reminiscence, ambition and hurt. But painful to watch Seung-min (Je-hoon) crestfallen at his perceived ‘betrayal’ by Seo-yeon. Again Suzy acts well as a softly spoken girl with strong ambition and manages to touch your heartstrings, too. Miss S is sure making headways in acting. Deja vu concerning Dream High, too, by the sharing of earphones for a romantic song. No doubt Tae-woong and Ga-in are just right for these characters (like ‘em both), but Je-hoon and Suzy would win the young S Koreans over, as they’ll identify with those first love years. Love needs mending, but A101 is good.
