YesAsia Editorial Description

From innocent first loves at seventeen to vows of a lifetime, Chen Sicheng's movie directorial debut Beijing Love Story, a follow-up to his same-titled television series, pieces together one's journey of love by telling five separate stories from the teens to the golden years. Following five couples portrayed by stars like Carina Lau, Tony Leung Ka Fai, Tong Liya, Yu Nan and Siqin Gaowa, the love story stretches across time and space to depict the struggles and dilemmas in every relationship.

Beijing Love Story starts with an overnight hook-up that results in unexpected pregnancy for a young couple portrayed by Chen Sicheng and Tong Liya. The second story revolves around a battered marriage choked with love affairs. A long-time couple played by Tony Leung and Carina Lau hopes to ignite their passion by traveling to Greece together. The sweet memories of first love are brought alive by Ouyang Nuonuo and Liu Haoran while Siqin Gaowa turns into a matchmaker for her gray-haired landlord in a love that spans life and death.

Professional Review of "Beijing Love Story (2014) (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)"

June 17, 2014

Romance anthology Beijing Love Story doesn't aim high and hits its reachable target with agreeable finesse. Director-writer-star Chen Sicheng adapts his own China television drama for this passing glance at love and its joys, sacrifices and assorted minutiae, featuring five pairs of actors each getting their own "love in the big city" story. The couples intersect with each other in clever ways, but few of the stories dig that deeply into the characters or situations. These are snapshots only – though to be fair, the film doesn't have the time to do much with each couple – and the familiar ideas, uncomfortable truths and soaring feels may be enough to make Beijing Love Story worthwhile. Love in little doses can be a treat.

Each of the film's stories depicts a different situation and stage of love. Chen Sicheng kicks things off as Chen Feng, a poor architect who never combs his hair and apparently owns only one shirt. Nevertheless, he enters into a love-at-first-sight romance with his dream girl, the beautiful Shen Yan (Chen's real-life spouse Tong Liya). Her mother and her super-rich ex (Geng Le) doubt their longevity, however. Meanwhile, Chen Feng's friend Wu Zheng (Wang Xuebing) is a regular player despite being faithfully married to Zhang Lei (Yu Nan) – an arrangement that's threatened when Zhang Lei cracks his mobile and finds incriminating photos. Incensed, she seeks her own tryst.

The couple has a connection to Liu Hui (Tony Leung Ka-Fai), who's in the midst of jetting to Greece for a secret rendezvous with the elegant Jia Ling (Carina Lau). Bur lusty romance soon turns to squabbling for the two. Meanwhile, Liu Hui's daughter Li Xingyang (Nana Ouyang) wants to appear on a TV talent show, but is forbidden. However, smitten-by-puppy-love classmate Song Ge (Liu Haoran) offers to be her benefactor. Finally, elderly Gao Xia (Siqin Gaowa) wishes to find a life partner for the aging Wang Daqi (Wang Qingxiang). She seems to find a perfect match in the sophisticated Xue Aijia (Elaine Kam), but there may be more to the situation than meets the eye.

The film opens in media res with a sudden event that hints at tragedy, and yet it never really trends in that direction. The opening instead becomes an alternate ending in this pseudo-existential grab bag of love stories where every situation is meant to reflect an aspect of love and its myriad possible outcomes – how very postmodern of the filmmakers! Beijing Love Story is occasionally too cloying in its exploration of love, and despite occasional surprise, audience expectations remain unchallenged. The plot twists are merely clichés subverting other clichés from this well-worn genre. Those looking for originality or revelation would be hard pressed to find it here.

However, what's left is quite watchable. Themes are familiar but pleasing, Beijing is the perfect densely-populated cosmopolitan space, and the actors are way above par. Chen Sicheng and Tong Liya are comparatively weak (he overacts, she's a fantasy construct), but Wang Xuebing is a charismatic heel and Yu Nan plays wounded so very well. Tony Leung Ka-Fai and Carina Lau bring scene-stealing energy to their roles, with Lau coming out on top with an especially sharp, smart performance. Youngsters Nana Ouyang and Liu Haoran bring fresh-faced appeal and seniors Siqin Gaowa, Wang Qingxang and Elaine Kam anchor the whole thing admirably. While not a special film, Beijing Love Story does enough well to be worth the time and effort spent.

City stories
When I visited Beijing for the first time this year, I asked a friend who moved to Beijing last year about the difference between people in Shanghai and Beijing. He said that while people in Shanghai – the financial capital of China - are mostly driven by making money, some people in Beijing are still driven by dreams. Modernity has clearly consumed Shanghai over the years, but a sense of traditional culture is still alive and well throughout Beijing, as if certain people in the city simply refuse to catch up to the modern world. As a world-class metropolis with its own set of problems, Beijing is as flawed as New York, Paris or Tokyo. However, those flaws also make Beijing a place filled with interesting stories about people from diverse backgrounds.

Actor Chen Sicheng has already covered several of those stories as the star, co-writer and director of the 2012 television drama Beijing Love Story about three college friends' pursuit of love, dreams and careers in the big city. Working with a bigger budget and a starry cast (though without most of his drama's co-stars, including the popular Mini Yang), Chen brings five new Beijing stories to the silver screen with his feature film directorial debut.

Only a thematic continuation of the television show, the film version of Beijing Love Story is about falling in and out of love as seen through the eyes of four generations of characters. Chen and his drama co-star (and now wife) Tong Liya start the relay with the first story about a romance between graphic designer Chen Feng (Chen) and white-collar office worker Shen Yan (Tong) that is derailed by financial difficulties. The most typical out of the five stories, Chen and Tong's installment gets the film off to a likeable start, though it doesn't offer anything new to the genre.

Wang Xuebing takes over the second story as Chen Feng's best friend Wu Zheng, a serial philanderer who proudly claims that his extramarital affairs make him treat his long-suffering wife Zhang Lei (Yu Nan) better. When Zhang Lei discovers her husband's affairs, she tries to give him a taste of his own medicine over a wild night out. An antithesis to the first story's fairy tale approach to love, this section is completely carried by Yu Nan, who effectively conveys the emotional suffering of the jilted wife without resorting to over-the-top hysterics.

Playing Zhang Lei's boss, Tony Leung Ka Fai co-stars with fellow Hong Kong star Carina Lau in the third segment about another couple in an extramarital affair. Shot in a picturesque Greek seaside village and set entirely in a hotel room (and its extravagant pool balcony), the segment features a surprise twist that can be detected from miles away. Nevertheless, it's one of the more charming sections of the film, thanks to the chemistry between Leung and Lau.

Chen returns to more conventional ground in the fourth segment with a schoolyard love story between a young boy and a talented cellist classmate that he has a crush on. Coming near the 90-minute point, this traditional story of young love slightly drags as the film begins to wear out its welcome, but it's nevertheless a pleasant detour that features a beautiful scene set on the peak of Jingshan Park, behind the Forbidden Palace.

Beijing Love Story comes full circle with an excellent finale. Veteran actor Wang Qinxiang stars as Old Wang, a retired man who is tired of the efforts of Mrs. Gao (Siqin Gaowa) to find him a new wife. Finally, he meets a real contender in Xue Aijia (Elaine Jin), a divorcee who has just returned from living overseas. Like the third segment, this final story has a twist that isn't hard to guess from the beginning, but it's carried by the performances and a lighthearted comedic tone that is only hurt by its melodramatic final scene.

None of the five stories in the film will ever be lauded for originality, but the flaws in Chen's script are well compensated by his skill as a director. Essentially directing five different films, Chen is a surprisingly confident director who moves through a wide range of styles in a very short time. Rather than presenting five different stories, Chen inserts little touches that connect the characters together, emphasizing that even people in a huge city like Beijing can share a connection. Like many great urban films, Beijing Love Story depicts the city as a place where people of different social classes, family backgrounds and even moral values can share the same space in pursuit of better lives for themselves (politics intentionally left out here). As my friend told me, Beijing may not be a great city, but it has a very unique and even mysterious type of charm. Perhaps the same can be said about this film as well.
