Xiao Zhun's world is like the elevator she operates in a department store: static, polite, low-key. 小尊就是那種走在路上撞到她，她也會跟你輕聲說對不起，然後默默走開的人。電梯小姐的工作彷佛就是她生活的縮影，一成不變，聽話，不與人爭。當她撞見男友劈腿，也只露出訓練良好，上排七顆牙齒的笑。但在這個晚上，她把她的竉物河豚網拍掉，她覺得應該替牠找一個更適合的環境。
於是小尊帶著河豚，跨過大半個城市，來到教練那個荒廢得像垃圾場的家，她穿上他老婆炫麗的洋裝，她發覺自己其實可以很不一樣，就算被他當成六花也不在乎。教練讓她留下來，因為她的聲音，該死的娃娃音，跟六花真的很像。他們一起生活，兩人愈想像一般平凡的夫妻，事情就愈不平凡，直到有一天教練意識到他是真的想知道她的真實姓名……

Certain movie plot/protagonists are more relevant to certain viewers and “Blowfish”, a sketch of Xiao-Zhun (Zhi Min Pan) a young fragile woman miffed at the men she shares her life with, is maybe more relevant to women in their twenties concerned about committable futures. As a metaphorical parallel, the resilient blowfish, subject to its given environment and happiness, becomes the central musing for Xiao-Zhun’s quite melancholic outlook on life. Why is her pet needle blowfish not eating the food Xiao-Zhun puts her, whereas her lorry driver boyfriend eats her food with gusto? (But bored with their sex life as he visits ‘Internet auctions’ on a shared computer). Xiao-Zhun also works as a ‘mechanical’ store elevator assistant, complying with her Corporation’s smile-with-precision-techniques to shoppers and business people alike. Xiao-Zhun though one day changes her shift with a colleague and arriving home early finds her fella ‘sleeping’ with another woman (probably one he found from his Internet ‘auction’ sites). Instead of using a blow torch on her hunky one’s nether regions (thank God Xiao-Zhun didn’t keep Piranhas), shy Xiao-Zhun simply smiles in her professional manner at the betrayal, casually auctions off her pet blowfish on the Internet (well, if you can’t beat ‘em…) and scoops her fish into a polythene bag as she sets off on a long bus journey to the pastoral rurals, leaving boyfriend and his new conquest behind. After travelling Xiao-Zhun meets a baseball coach she’d auctioned her blowfish to. As his wife had also left him, the baseball coach takes an interest sexually in Xiao-Zhun and its not long before passion is spent between them. Xiao-Zhun then moves in with the coach, wearing his wife’s summer dresses for lovemaking. But as contentment settles into Xiao-Zhun’s new dreamy life, the baseball coach’s wife returns.
“Blowfish” is symbolic (symmetrical bath scene and snake-winding path Xiao-Zhun travels) of a woman’s uncertainties of human relationships, attested to the un-chosen habitat of a blowfish. But Xiao-Zhun’s sexuality with her country boyfriend is more about being wanted than servitude relationships and her ‘look good and smile’ city job. Sparse on dialogue it’s also a sensual erotic movie without being too explicit and melancholic without being too depressing. Overall a dreamy evocative film that pleases the emotions on good levels and of how sexuality, luxury and indulgence can lead to repetitive boredom on another. |
