YesAsia Editorial Description

The Hung Hing boys of the Young and Dangerous series return for Born To Be King, another entry in the popular triad saga! Now a tough triad with a seasoned and tragic career, Chan Ho Nam (Ekin Cheng) gets promoted to the head of the Hung Hing Group. Meanwhile, his best buddy Chicken (Jordan Chan) is nominated for the head of Taiwan's San Luen Group, but political infighting and backstabbing make his promotion a hotbed of triad intrigue. When Chicken enters into a marriage of convenience with Nanako (Anya), the daughter of Japanese Yakuza leader Yamada (the great Sonny Chiba), it further worries the Taiwanese. Treachery is revealed, and sides are taken as Hung Hing, San Luen, and the Yamada Clan wrestle for supremacy of the Asian underworld!

The sixth and final film in the Young and Dangerous series, Born To Be King brings many themes and storylines from the entire series to a satisfying, climactic close. Sexy Shu Qi returns from Young and Dangerous 5 as Ho Nam's girlfriend, but she finds new competition in a Taiwanese school teacher (Gigi Lai) who look suspiciously like Ho Nam's departed girlfriend Smartie! Sandra Ng again plays the popular bisexual triad leader Sister Thirteen, and regular cast members Roy Cheung, Blackie Ke Shou Liang, Alex Man, Jerry Lam, Chin Ka Lok, Michael Tse, and Jason Chu all make appearances. Directed by regular series director Andrew Lau, Born To Be King is possibly the most powerful and dramatic Young and Dangerous yet!

Professional Review of "Born To Be King (2000) (Blu-ray) (Remastered) (Hong Kong Version)"

November 7, 2005

This professional review refers to Born To Be King (2000) (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)
The latest installment of the Young and Dangerous series takes place during Taiwan's controversial March 2000 elections. Previously controlled by the triad-friendly Kuomintang (KMT) party, Taiwan is constantly under threat from China. Triads are rumored to be in bed with the KMT, offing rivals and sliding briefcases full of cash across enormous mahogany desks. Existing in a near-constant national security crisis, the KMT has limited freedom of speech and the freedom of the press and the result has been a political party that controls the entire country with the iron hand of a dictator.

There have been two elections for president of Taiwan. The first elected a conservative KMT candidate during a security crisis, but the second was in 2000, and Y&D does it up, but good. The KMT manipulates election results and no one expected KMT candidate Lien Chan to have much trouble defeating Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate, Chen Shui-bian, and his running mate, Lu Hsiu-lien, a feminist who spent five years in prison for giving a speech criticizing the KMT. But there were scandals, problems, allegations of fraud, and in the end the anti-crime DPP ticket emerged victorious. The first non-KMT government in modern Taiwanese history.

Left out in the cold, the triads panic. Should they ally with the government by publicly going straight or should they just stick it out and wait for the corruption to set in? Jordan Chan is in the middle of powerplays and Machiavellian maneuvers as the Sun Luen gang tries to figure out its future. Surprisingly, the saner section of Sun Luen is the more cynical one that expects business as usual to proceed after a brief period of adjustment. Members of the gangs are played by arthouse darlings and Hou Hsiao-hsien regulars Jack Gao (Full Alert, Goodbye South Goodbye) and Chen Sung-yung (Prison on Fire II, City of Sadness).

Despite getting a bit slow in the middle, there's an eerily boring quality to the Sun Luen scenes that seems to mirror life. Something important is going on but it's so boring you can't focus past the droning voices and concentrate on the meaning behind them. Chicken (Jordan Chan) brings his Hung Hing boys over to Taiwan to help straighten out the mess and while the movie will mean more to those who understand the politics, there're plenty of Y&D antics to please the fans. While street fights have been replaced by boardroom talks, there are one or two gangwar setpieces, and while age is taking its toll on the Hung Hing boys, they still look good, and that's what counts.
