YesAsia Editorial Description
Kang To (Joo Won) lost his father to the independence movement, but he has chosen to walk a different path out of poverty and suffering. As a Korean in the Japanese police force, he doggedly rises the ranks and sneers at those who call him a traitor. He is obsessed with bringing in the elusive masked independence fighter Gaksital, who is a hero to the people but a thorn to his side. The day Kang To catches Gaksital, however, will be the day he himself takes up the mask and transforms into Gaksital...

Aired to high ratings and reviews in summer 2012, Bridal Mask earns its accolades with the violent and rousing origin story of a freedom fighter during the Japanese occupation era. Based on a Hur Young Man comic, the epic series thrusts audiences into the turbulent world of the 1930s when Korea was under Japanese colonial rule. In those dark times, there shone one beacon of hope for the common people, the eponymous masked hero known as Gaksital.
As resounding a sentiment and story as this may seem with Korean audiences, the Japanese occupation era is actually a time period not oft touched in Korean dramas, whose biggest export market is, after all, Japan. For the same reason, it was rumored that most Korean Wave actors wouldn't even consider the role of Gaksital. True or not, the primetime starring role landed with a relative newcomer in Joo Won, who turned one of the meatiest characters an actor could ask for into yet another breakout performance.
Joo Won's Lee Kang To makes a fascinating hero in that he starts his journey as an antihero, one whose mistakes seem near irredeemable. As the sole Korean officer in the predominantly Japanese police force, Kang To is ruthlessly ambitious and obsessed with capturing rebel nationalists, in particular Gaksital, not knowing that the man behind the mask is someone close to him. When Kang To eventually takes up the mask of Gaksital himself, it is not in the name of justice or nationalism, but out of guilt, rage and desperation.
Kang To has an equally complex and conflicted nemesis in friend-turned-enemy Kimura Shunji, a sympathetic Japanese teacher who turns brutal after losing his family to Gaksital. Long due a breakthrough, Park Ki Woong delivers the most memorable performance of his career as the tragic and terrifying Shunji. The opposing character arcs of Kang To and Shunji – one gradually growing into the role of the hero, the other gradually losing his soul to revenge – is among one of the most compelling and anguished conflicts Korean television has to offer. If ever tragic bromance was more gripping than tragic romance, it would be in the broken friendship of Kang To and Shunji.
Their heartwrenchingly personal conflict plays out in an intensely politicized historical landscape that offers no reprieve from the unrelenting violence and bloodshed and no escape from the irreconcilable differences of country and honor. Uncompromisingly political yet also harrowingly human, Bridal Mask simply gets you in the gut and never lets up.
