YesAsia Editorial Description
Butterfly is adapted from Taiwanese author Chen Hsueh's short story "The Mark of the Butterfly". Starring Josie Ho, Eric Kot, Tian Yuan, Isabel Chan and Joman Chiang, it is about a woman's struggle to come to terms with her true self, the importance to break out from her cocoon and set herself free. Flavia (Josie Ho) is a married teacher, who lives a comfortable but uneventful life with her husband (Eric Kot) and daughter, until one day she meets Yip (Tian Yuan), a young girl caught shoplifting in a supermarket. After rescuing her, Flavia is slowly seduced by the free-spirited singer, reigniting the desires she has long buried. Years ago, Flavia (Isabel Chan) had a passionate relationship with the rebellious and political Jin (Joman Chaing), until an event forced them apart. Flavia, torn between her devotion to her family and her feelings for Yip, must choose between being responsible to others or living the life she wants for the first time...
The Blu-ray includes audio commentary, production featurette, interviews with the cast, production featurette, deleted scenes with director's commentary, and the MV for at17's The Best Is Yet To Come.

Like a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis, Flavia finds her lesbian passion reawakened after a chance encounter with a carefree and spirited singer/songwriter. A shattering new film from award-winning director Yan Yan Mak (Gege, 2001), Butterfly alternates between the past and the present, juxtaposing a romance to a rebellious human rights activist in 1989 with her current struggles as a wife and mother fronted by a brave and sympathetic performance by Josie Ho, the film dares to challenge the institutions of family and marriage while championing individual rights for all Hong Kongers, gays and lesbians included. Opening Film at Venice Film Festival Critics Week.

I bought 2 DVDs, one is called Clara's Summer and another, Butterfly. In comparison, Butterfly lacks substance and impact. True, there are lots of special effects but they do not quite go well or connect with the audience. Whereas Clara's Summer is a simpler flim with a meaning behind. Connectivity is very important and with all the hype from fellow friends, I think I raised my expectations too much |

The album was rather nice, especially those songs which were used as soundtracks in the movie.. Everytime my partner and I listen to the album, scenes from the movie come back to us. We have watched this movie countless times since the purchase few months back. We still enjoy the movie very much. It's highly recommended. This is one of the best movies that I have ever watched with queer content in it... |

I can't remember the last time I saw an HK film this beautiful that's not associated with Wong Kar Wai. The use of 16mm camera seems excessive at times, but ultimately helps define the "look" of the film. What I find kind of annoying though is the choppy editing - there's tasteful non-linear storytelling, and then there's poor storytelling/editing that screams "I'm trying so hard!" This film falls in the latter.
Overall, "Butterfly" has solid acting, nice cinematography, and an interesting, albeit flawed, plot. And just so I can get this out of my system, ANY film with a giant movie poster of "Blow-Up" as part of the set is worth checking out! |

I found this movie to be very refreshing.
As a male I did not feel like I was bashed at all. In fact, I felt like this movie showed males in a realisticly positive way. The message of the movie was very beautiful. The story was believable. I would recommand this movie to anyone who enjoy movies that encourages you to think about human rights and life in general. |

Not exciting
The flashes between past and present are neat, but the absence of a single strong or even likeable character is the main flaw. The very long scenes of women hugging each other are plain boring. |
