YesAsia Editorial Description
The celebrated life and tragic death of famed silent film star Ruan Lingyu is told in Stanley Kwan's award-winning docudrama Center Stage. Also known as Actress, the film covers a period from 1929 to 1935 when Ruan Lingyu (Maggie Cheung) ruled the screen as the undisputed goddess of Chinese cinema. But in private, Ruan was a rebellious figure who bristled against the rigid societal conventions of her time. Ruan took her own life at the age of 25 amidst tabloid criticism and controversy, but her legend is immortalized in Stanley Kwan's loving, engrossing work. Utilizing archival footage from Ruan Lingyu's early films, interview segments with her contemporaries and modern actors, re-enactments of select Ruan Lingyu performances by Maggie Cheung, and dramatized sequences depicting the turbulent last years of her life, Center Stage paints a complex, structurally enthralling portrait of a beloved artist of the cinema.
Maggie Cheung turns in the performance of a lifetime as Ruan Lingyu, earning her Best Actress at the 42nd Berlin International Film Festival. The film also swept five awards the 12th Hong Kong Film Awards in 1992. Co-starring Cecilia Yip, Tony Leung Ka Fai, and Carina Lau, Center Stage is a stunning work of art that can simultaneously challenge and delight film lovers everywhere.

This is the true story of Yuan Ling-yu, the first movie star of the 1930's. Hailing from an obscure background, she became the prima donna of the Chinese screen. Students worshipped her as a cult symbol. Men looked at her with dreamy eyes and women looked at her sideways and full of hate.
Yes, for nine years since her movie at 16, Yuan Ling-yu managed to star in 29 movies. Her roles were usually pathetic ones : girl student, rustic maid, factory hand, prostitute, socialite and authoress. And her endings were invariably tragic : incarceration in a prison, mental breakdown, forced marriages, starvation, illness and even suicide......

Great but flawed in my opinion.
Great but flawed in my opinion.
Overall this is a very good movie with great directing and acting telling a trajic story that until now I never knew had happened. My only problem with this movie is the documentary footage that was thrown in from time to time. It seems that other reviewers tend to enjoy this aspect of the movie and I did find those scenes interesting as well. I just feel that they should have been in a seperate documentary, perhaps as a featurette. These parts of the movie happen abruptly and often times kill the mood. I would much rather have just seen the movie play out so I could lose myself in it. If it wasn't for this flaw I would probably have given this movie five stars. But this is still a great movie and definitely worth getting your hands on. |

After all these years
After all these years
One of my favourite films, and probably the one that I've seen more than any other since it's release in 1991. This is a longer version of the film, a "director's cut", but possibly more importantly, this DVD contains a remastered version of the film, far superior in quality than other home video releases prior. I found this longer cut of the film to be quite different in tone to the original. Much more "documentary" footage is used here, with a lot of emphasis on the makers' thoughts on the subject, as well as a very conscious effort at contrasting the lives of the two actors (Ruan Lingyu and Maggie Cheung). This longer version seems a lot more faithful to its Brechtian intentions than the theatrical version, which ended up being (very effectively) emotional and slightly melodramatic. A crucial difference in the 2 editions are the sequences at the end of the film. While the theatrical version dwells on Ruan's suicide, and hence focussing on the tragedy of Ruan's death, the extended cut introduces frequent "cut-away" jumps to documentary footage that disallow the "enjoyment" of the melodrama of Ruan's death. I'd recommend that viewers experience the original cut prior to this new version of the film, if only for a bit of intense Chinese-flavoured melancholy. |

Only Intelligent People can appreate this Movie
Only Intelligent People can appreate this Movie
I saw this movie and although the pace is quite slow, but the story is real and serious. This is a great sad tale of a great actress that was tore apart by the public and died in the end. I think this is what happens to alot of people when the public throws in their two cent on everything that they know nothing of and gets someone killed. So forget the public and for get you meg the reviewer! You all know nothing about anything. |

Interesting!
Hey Meg if you didn't like it, why did you give it a full star rating??? I saw the movie and it was okay, but its hard for people to watch, because its a true story with real beginnings and endings. Regualr people can't see the art and human socializm in it. |

SLOW
Didn't like it. The pace is too slow and the story is dull. Have no idea why Zhou Jie's name is included in the cast. If you blink, you will miss his appearance. So, if you want to watch this show because of ZJ, don't. |
