The real meaning of friendship
Lacking a fantasy plot with supernatural elements, Chibi Maruko-chan may not be as exciting as other famous manga/anime like Doraemon and Pokemon. However, it successfully strikes a chord with almost everyone because of its down-to-earth story of a nine-year-old schoolgirl. Chibi Maruko-chan represents not just the childhood of the author but also those who don't want to grow up.

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the anime, author Sakura Momoko welcomes six foreign exchange friends to Maruko-chan's town in the feature film Chibi Maruko-chan - A Boy From Italy. Andrea, who comes from Italy, stays at Maruko-chan's home and the two soon become friends. Maruko-chan travels with Andrea around Osaka and Kyoto to fulfill his dream of meeting his late grandfather's old friends. Without a smartphone and the Internet, it's not easy for Maruko-chan to help Andrea find his grandfather's friends. However, she encourages Andrea and they finally find the address in a phone book.

Chibi Maruko-chan - A Boy From Italy stays true to the series' drawing style and retains its original flavor. Though the story is still set in 1974, Maruko-chan is no longer the naughty nine-year-old who deliberately farts to anger her sister or skips classes by pretending to be sick, but a warm-hearted girl who totally devotes herself to her friends. Long-distance friendship was hard to maintain before the emergence of smartphones and the Internet. Hence, Maruko-chan is afraid of losing Andrea when he leaves Japan since each friendship is valuable to her. On the contrary, modern people can easily make "friends" on the Internet with a simple click on the "Accept" button even though they know nothing about each other. Chibi Maruko-chan reminds us of the real meaning of friendship that has been forgotten by too many people nowadays.
