When the perpetually out-of-work A-Da (Huang He) goes to pay, and hopefully contest, his fines for discarding cigarette ends on the street, he learns that informers of this particular misdemeanor are entitled to 30% of fines collected. Sensing an opportunity to make some easy money, he installs a hidden camera in his bike helmet and starts his new "job" as an informer.

Using this amusing premise as a backdrop, Taiwanese TV movie Cigarette Ends touchingly explores the various relationships A-Da has with the people in his life: the father (Xi Xiang, Zone Pro Site) with whom he frequently clashes over his joblessness and other unresolved issues; a motorcycle-riding old man (Tsai Ming Shiou) whose struggles with a sick wife A-Da inadvertently discovers while filming cigarette-discarders; and a potential love interest (newcomer Ye Ci Yu) who works in a convenience store. This simple yet affecting film about the everyday struggles of normal people earned leading man Huang He, supporting actor Xi Xiang and director Liao Shi Han nominations at the 49th Golden Bell Awards.
