- Can Blu-ray Disc players play regular DVDs?
The short answer is yes. Blu-ray players produced by major electronics companies (including Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Pioneer and Sharp) definitely have backwards DVD compatibility. Most BD players also upscale DVDs to high definition.
In general, all BD players should support the DVD format, as it does not make sense for the manufacturer to do otherwise. However, there is no official standard and it is ultimately up to each manufacturer. Read the product information carefully before making a purchase.
