YesAsia Editorial Description

Known for his collaborations with Johnnie To, including Mad Detective and Blind Detective, Hong Kong writer-director Wai Ka Fai returns with the twist-filled crime suspense thriller Detective vs. Sleuths, his first solo directorial effort since 2009's Written By. Wai reunites with Mad Detective star Sean Lau Ching Wan, who takes on an eccentric detective role again. Raymond Lam and Charlene Choi co-star as a husband and wife team of crime unit detectives. Carman Lee, Tan Kai, Carlos Chan, Kathy Yuen and Jeana Ho are also in the cast. Detective vs. Sleuths won Best Director, Best Actor, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography at the 41st Hong Kong Film Awards.

Formerly a legendary detective in the Hong Kong police, Lee Jun (Sean Lau) was dismissed from the force due to his mental health issues. A series of murders occur in Hong Kong, and forewarnings and clues are left at the crime scene by the "Chosen Sleuths." The police believe that Lee may be connected to the case, while Lee sets out to investigate on his own and prove that he is the true chosen sleuth.

He who fights with monsters
Detective vs. Sleuths is Wai Ka Fai's first directorial effort in over a decade, and apparently he put all his creative juices into this, because it is impressively over the top. The writer-director packs twist after twist and a whole variety of unhinged characters into this wild Hong Kong crime action thriller with a very high body count. Lau Ching Wan – always the first pick to play Wai Ka Fai characters who are losing a handle on reality (see: Written By and Mad Detective) – anchors the madness as the protagonist who is the maddest yet shrewdest of them all.

Detective vs. Sleuths begins with vignettes of notorious past murder cases before introducing crimes happening in the present day. A group of masked vigilantes, who identify themselves as "Chosen Sleuths," are killing off monstrous killers that got away in eye-for-an-eye manner, brazenly leaving police case numbers at the crime scene to foreshadow their next hit. The police are nonplussed, and so is former police detective Lee Jun (Lau Ching Wan) who got booted from the force after his mental health issues led to a dangerous altercation. Though troubled by psychosis, Lee Jun is a crime-solving legend who also questioned and investigated the cases targeted by the Chosen Sleuths. Barging recklessly from scene to scene, he is determined to stop the Chosen Sleuths and prove that he is the best sleuth.

Things spiral violently out of control as the vigilantes go head to head with the police, including Raymond Lam and Charlene Choi as a husband and wife team of detectives. With Lee Jun deciphering clues and disrupting plans on all sides, the identities of the Chosen Sleuths and the shocking truth behind a grisly serial murder case begin to come to light.

Detective vs. Sleuths is on narrative overdrive from beginning to end with gruesome crimes and numerous twists and turns that just keep coming. I expected a Wai Ka Fai solo directorial effort to be less action-oriented than his collaborations with Johnnie To, but Detective vs. Sleuths is also packed with action sequences choreographed by Wong Wai Leung.

While Detective vs. Sleuths may put off those who want a smarter and subtler film, it eventually works by just being so deliriously over the top. Subtlety was clearly out of the equation the moment Charlene Choi's character, who is in the third trimester of pregnancy, started running after armed criminals in police operations. Just suspend disbelief and go along for the crazy ride, straight to the final act that is overblown in more ways than one. Detective vs. Sleuths is many things, but it's certainly not boring.
