YesAsia Editorial Description

Widely considered to be one of the best, if not the best, Jackie Chan film, the 1994 kung fu classic Drunken Master II (a.k.a. The Legend of Drunken Master) sees the action superstar returning to the role of legendary folk hero Wong Fei Hung after 1978's Drunken Master. Jackie breaks out the wild drunken boxing and traditional martial arts in elaborate action sequences, including a famous final fight scene with Ken Lo. Directed by another Hong Kong action legend in Lau Kar Leung (The 36th Chamber of Shaolin), Drunken Master II co-stars Ti Lung, Anita Mui and Felix Wong, and it features a cameo appearance by Andy Lau who headlines the follow-up Drunken Master III that came out the same year.

Wong Fei Hung (Jackie Chan) traveled to northeastern China with his father Wong Kei Ying (Ti Lung) to get medicine for a patient. At the train station, he's upset to see that the corrupt warlord government is forcing people to pay duties on goods. To avoid the unfair charge, Fei Hung sneaks the ginseng he's carrying into the luggage of a British Consulate worker. While trying to retrieve the ginseng on the train, he gets into an altercation with a martial artist (Lau Kar Leung) who is trying to steal something. Due to a mix-up, the thief steals the ginseng, while Fei Hung ends up with a box containing a valuable antique seal. Suddenly, he's in double the trouble with the ginseng lost and suspicious henchmen chasing after him for the seal.

This edition includes the original uncut Hong Kong version of the film with the original Cantonese mono track and an English track (not dubbed by Jackie Chan).

Product Information

Wong Fei-Hung knows the rule: no drunken boxing without his father's permission. Rules, however, are sometimes made to be broken. So is anything else that crosses Fei-Hung's path. Jackie Chan plays Fei-Hung in the wildly inventive and hilarious comedy/adventure hailed as one of his all-time best. Determined to stop the smugglers of priceless national artifacts, Fei-Hung confronts his foes with drunken boxing, a loose-limbed fighting style in which he staggers, leans weaves and clowns like a sailor on shore leave - whose bravura touches include Fei-Hung turning himself into a human blowtorch - took four sober-minded months to shoot. It's 200-proof excitement!

Here's a review of ALL DVDs/Blu-rays of this movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I'm going to make sure all of you know which DVDs are out there of this classic kung-fu film.

R1 Dimension/Disney (also available on blu-ray): This is the most widely available release of this classic film. It has been retitled to "Legend of the Drunken Master". As far as cuts go, only the last 37 seconds are cut, which shows that Wong Fei-Hung is still mentally impaired from the industrial alcohol. Dimension cut this scene, believing it to be "tasteless" and offensive to disabled people.

The movie's score and "old school" sound effects of the original version have been changed. The sound effects of the fight scenes are much less powerful and more "Americanized". In addition to this, the original Cantonese dialog has been dubbed into English. Jackie Chan does his own dub for this release, and I can personally testify that he did a good job! In fact, I believe that this English dub is great. All the actors (including Jackie Chan) are very expressive!

Also, this DVD/blu-ray is the only release which has GREAT picture quality. It's anamorphic and remastered with the original aspect ratio.

R0 Thakral: This DVD is now out of print, but you might be able to find it on other websites. It contains the ending scene which was cut from the Dimension/Disney release. It shows a picture of Jackie Chan doing a pose in front of ceramic wine jugs, and simply says "Drunken Boxing II" or "Drunken Fist II" in Chinese characters on the front (no English words). It has a Cantonese and Mandarin dub (neither of which has Jackie Chan's voice). It also comes with removable English and Chinese subtitles.

However, the biggest flaw to this DVD is the picture quality. Not only is it just plain awful, but the 2:35:1 aspect ratio has been CROPPED to 1:85:1.

Warner Bros R2/R3 DVD: This DVD is also out of print but probably available on other websites. It was released in Hong Kong, Korea, and Japan. The R2 Japanese DVD only has the Cantonese dub and a Japanese dub. The R3 release has the Cantonese & Mandarin dub, along with the Golden Harvest "export" English dub! Unlike Dimension's English dub, this English dub maintains the original score and sound effects, and plays an instrumental version of the theme song during the credits. But alas, this English dub doesn't have Jackie Chan's voice.

There are no English subtitles! However, the R3 DVD has Chinese, Korean, and Thai subtitles, while the Japanese DVD has Japanese subs.

As for the picture, it's presented in its correct aspect ratio of 2:35:1. However, it's non-anamorphic. And this release is cut EVEN MORE than Dimension's. It ends as soon as Fei-Hung faints from the final fight!

So to recap, here are the things to remember about each release.

Only the Thakral DVD is 100% uncut & undubbed with English (& Chinese) subtitles.
Only the Dimension DVD/blu-ray is remastered & anamorphic (and high-definition)
Only the Dimension DVD/blu-ray has Jackie Chan's voice (for the English dub)
Only the WB DVDs have the original score & sound effects WITH the original aspect ratio

i prefer the originaL verison Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
BriLLiant movie. . .
i've even heard Jackie Chan himseLf say in an interview somewhere, that this is his finest piece of work so far. . .
i was happy & excited that there was a US DVD version of this fiLm, because it's just too hard to get hoLd of anywhere. . .
but, if you're Looking for an originaL Cantonese dub with EngLish subtitLes Like i was, then don't get this one, for it has been EngLish dubbed. . .but a pLus side is that it is Jackie Chan who dubbed his own voice, so that's ok i guess. . ..knowing this DVD had been EngLish dubbed, meant that they had aLso changed the originaL score (soundtrack of the movie) which they have done. . .no more is that ever so famous Wong Fei Hung theme that we aLL rememberr from Jackie Chan's "Drunken Master" or "Once Upon a Time in China" series. . .to what i remember, the originaL Catonese version had this theme. . .& aLso, there's a coupLe of minutes or so of the ending that has been cut out in this version. . .
to sum up,
a Jackie Chan fan, such as myseLf, needs to have this movie in their coLLection. . !! the movie is BRiLLiANT, but this DVD version, i personaLLy do not favor compared to the originaL version as i've said. . !! this is why i gave it one star away from making this DVD a PerFecT 10. . .
peace out. . .

Drunken Master II Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Watched this on the old VHS and Jackie hasn't lost one bit of himself to carry on from Drunken Master I. Although his father character now replaced by Ti Lung, he's just as good and Anita Mui is fabulous. After this story, you'll realise why his character , Wong Fei Hung, promised not to drink alcohol. I've been trying to locate this Drunken Master II in digitally remastered copy but could never find one for Region 4. It's also known as The Legend of Drunken Master in Australia but it's dubbed in english. For true Jackie Chan fans, we want it in original cantonese plus all the special features.

Jackie is the Greatest Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I love and admire Jackie Chan on so many levels.

I watch even his oldest, but I must say this is his greatest. The story content is great, great stunts, and Chinese Classism make this well worth almost any price.
