Grossing over three billion yen in China, Wen Muye's comedy-drama Dying to Survive has won both box office and accolades for its real-life-inspired story of an aphrodisiacs peddler who smuggles low-cost cancer medication from India into China. Hailed for its strong performances and social realism, the film depicts the grassroots struggles of the poor and powerless while maintaining a tenacious sense of heart and humor. Dying to Survive won Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor for Xu Zheng at the Golden Horse Film Awards.

Cheng Yong (Xu Zheng) sells aphrodisiac oils from a dinky shop in Shanghai. In 2002, he is introduced to leukemia patient Lu Shouyi (Wang Chuanjun), who asks him to help bring in a batch of leukemia treatment drugs from India. The medication from India is significantly cheaper than the medication available in China which is fixed at an unreasonably high price by the pharmaceutical company. Though aware that smuggling medicine is illegal, the financially strapped Cheng Yong takes on the venture to earn quick cash. As word spreads among the sick, Cheng Yong's business grows bigger and bigger. Though he was first motivated by profit, he soon realizes that many leukemia patients struggle to afford the expensive medicine – and that lives are at stake when the authorities crack down on his operation.

[ストーリー]
上海で強壮剤を販売する店主チョンは、店の家賃さえ払えず、妻にも見放され、人生の目標を見失っていた。ある日、慢性骨髄性白血病を患うリュが、国内では認可されていない、安価で成分が同じインドのジェネリック薬を購入して欲しいという依頼をしに店に訪れた。最初は申し出を断ったものの、金に目がくらんだチョンは、ジェネリック薬の密輸・販売に手を染め、より多くの薬を仕入れるため白血病患者たちとグループを結成。依頼人のリュを始め、白血病患者が集まるネットコミュニティ管理人のリウ、中国語なまりの英語を操るリウ牧師、不良少年のボンらが加わり、事業はさらに大きく拡大していくが……。
