YesAsia Editorial Description

In the last ten years, the Emperor Entertainment Group (EEG) has developed into one of the biggest entertainment conglomerates in Hong Kong and other Asian regions, being a major force in both the music and the movie sectors. To commemorate the company's successful first decade in the business, EEG assembled its stars at the special show held on February 27, 2010 at the Cotai Arena, The Venetian Macao. The show was made in the mold of the Kohaku Uta Gassen with Joey Yung and Leo Ku as captains of the red team and the white team respectively. The singers took turn to perform the greatest hit songs ever released by EEG (and its predecessor Fitto Records), plus Leo and Joey did solo medleys, while Twins rounded out the show with their long-awaited reunion on stage!

Twins, Boy'z and all that jazz
Gold Label made a decent run for the title in the last few years, but the defining Hong Kong music label of the last decade is clearly EEG. It was EEG that ushered in a new generation of Hong Kong idols in the late nineties and early 2000s with their young lineup of Nic Tse, Eason Chan, Joey Yung, Twins, and Edison Chen. And for better or worse, it's EEG that has provided some of the most unforgettable entertainment headlines of the last ten years. EEG rung in their 10th anniversary with a special concert on February 27, 2010 at the Cotai Arena in Macau. Taking a page from the Kohaku, the EEG 10th Anniversary Concert was structured as a friendly competition between the Joey Yung-led girls' team and the Leo Ku-led guys' team.

Just about the entire roster of EEG artists show up and clock in the minutes for a nonstop medley of past and present EEG hits. Nothing fancy is attempted, but EEG has produced so many hit songs in the last ten plus years, the round-robin singing more than adequately fills up the concert's time. Plus, there are some unexpected selections in the medleys and covers, like Joey Yung and Wong Cho Lam's rendition of the Julian Cheung and Maple Hui karaoke classic "Modern Love Story", Leo Ku attempting "Viva" and "Hong Kong", and the gleeful fact that Veronica Yip is covered not once, not twice, but three times during the course of the concert.

The concert provides a great chance to see, hear, and compare all of EEG's stars on the same stage, and that's completely entertaining in and of itself, especially once you bring in the less famous artists. EEG hasn't created a superstar since Twins, which means they haven't created a superstar in a good eight years, but that doesn't mean they haven't been busy grooming other almost-but-not-quite-there artists who get their share of face time at the company concert. Despite the distractingly unfortunate leotard, Vincy Chan makes a good case for divadom, never skipping a beat be it when she's dancing to fast song "Expose", dueting with Hai Ming Wai, or softly crooning her debut ballad "Feeling". The comparisons to Sandy Lam are valid; unfortunately, that style of performance is too dated to push her to the next level in today's market. Breakthrough is even less likely for Yumiko Cheng, but her "Relative Humidity" and "Morning Exercise Song" are actually great dance songs, even if she has trouble holding a tune live. Three years into her career, Sherman Chung still seems more likely to be the next Yumiko than the next Joey, but I changed my mind a little after watching her charismatic performances of Veronica Yip's "Come Dream" and her hit ballad "A Letter to Myself".

Among the guys, Deep Ng once again demonstrates that the reason he's managed to defy the odds and stick around for so long is because he can sing. EEG's two more marketable and photogenic male idols, William Chan and Ken Hung, are comparatively less assured on the vocals. Sick puppy Ken hits the notes but is too subdued in his delivery of "King of Karaoke"; he fares better on his own "Nathan Road", which starts shaky but closes strong. As for William, EEG is on the right path grooming him as Hong Kong's new-generation dance king, but they need to get him better songs. William's vocal abilities are average and his dancing is only above average by Canto-pop standards, but he can impress overall when his dance moves are combined with a well-produced song like Taxi. He doesn't, however, have enough stage presence yet to make "Warrior" cool instead of cheesy, and Do You Wanna Dance is just generic nineties-sounding fluff. While William steps up the game as a solo artist, EEG sends us back into twilight zone with the reunion of the original Boy'z, one of the night's most pleasant surprises. Kenny and an unshaven Steven perform only as a duo for the concert, singing their early hits "La La World" and "Unchanging Habit" as if Sun Boy'z never happened.

With original franchise man Nic Tse busy with everything but singing - and apparently so above the fray that he only needs to show up for greetings at the concert's start - the label's top two male singers are now both adopted sons who don't quite fit with the EEG image. The recent signing of Leo Ku marks the first time the company has flat-out courted an A-list Canto-pop artist instead of grooming their own. It's a bit odd to see Leo Ku as the face of EEG, but if the concert's mood is any indication, the label and the other artists should benefit greatly from his easy banter and easygoing presence. EEG's new ace Raymond Lam takes the Steady Eddie route and sings his theme song hits "Love to Search for You in Memories" and "Love Without Regret". It's business as usual for the television idol who belongs to TVB first, and EEG second; nonetheless, launching Raymond's long-delayed singing career is undeniably one of the best things EEG has done for themselves and for Canto-pop in the last two years. The other popular TVB crossover, Wong Cho Lam, works overtime as host, singer, and comedian for the concert, a good call since most of EEG's singers aren't too strong in the talking department.

Other highlights of the concert include the always welcome appearance of Anthony Wong, aptly described as the "idol's idol" by Wong Cho Lam, and the revelation that Mainland folk duo Age of Water & Wood is actually signed to EEG (what a strange fit!), but the big event of the night is of course the long-awaited comeback of Twins, who close the show to great cheers. The girls sing back-to-back medleys of their classics, and end with their new song "Everyone Bounces Up". It's hard to not smile when you hear the tinkling opening notes of "Girl's School Male Student" and "Love is Greater than the Sky". The dancing is slightly awkward, the singing slightly immature - just like vintage Twins!

It's probably not a good sign that at the end of the decade, seeing Twins and Boy'z back together again is the best EEG can do, but for this anniversary concert the throwback nostalgia is exactly what fans want. The last ten years were full of ups and downs for the singers and the fans, but we did get many, many memorable hit songs out of the deal. Of course, EEG will have to change their game if they want to continue to be Hong Kong's premier pop powerhouse in the next ten years as well, and I hope they start with firing whoever dressed Joey in flamingo pants for the concert.
