The first episode of tvN's 2014 drama Emergency Couple swiftly covers an entire fairy tale love story and its disillusioned derailing. Despite family objections, protagonists Oh Jin Hee (Song Ji Hyo) and Oh Chang Min (Choi Jin Hyuk) race exuberantly to the altar, but the honeymoon period doesn't last long. The young marriage buckles under growing real-world pressures and neurotic mistrust, culminating in an epic argument in which the resultant state of their destroyed living room encapsulated how far their relationship had fallen apart.
After showing that disapproving K-Drama mothers may be right after all about the nonviability of mismatched true-love pairings, the real story picks up six years later when the divorced couple crosses paths again as interns at the same hospital. The first day of work holds great meaning for both of them. Having once quit school to marry Jin Hee, Chang Min is getting his briefly interrupted life back on the elite track he belongs. Jin Hee, meanwhile, worked her heart out to get into medical school and regain the self-esteem she lost during her failed marriage. Of course, the fresh beginning turns into a shocking throwback when the two Dr. Ohs discover they're colleagues.
There are two sides to Emergency Couple. On the one hand, it's a medical series about rookie doctors going through the trials and tribulations of the medical profession, complete with improbable emergencies every other day and a genius supervising chief resident (an endearingly stiff Lee Pil Mo), who cuts them down with stern words but turns out to be a big softie inside. Though the medical scenarios and training aren't always that convincing, the process in which the protagonists gradually come into their own as doctors is adequately engaging and true to the genre.
As a romantic series, Emergency Couple creates a rocky second chance for bickering former lovers to make up and fall in love once more. Their spiteful fighting and efforts to hide their true relationship from colleagues provide plenty of laughs, and the drama does put effort into redefining the protagonists' relationship as they confront the mistakes of their past and their unresolved love, resentment and self-denial. Unfortunately, the dreaded interfering mother (Chang Min's) does appear and she's particularly annoying. To offset that, Jin Hee's warm and wacky family is quite lovely, and her sister has the cutest, most expressive baby ever. Every scene with Baby Gook is a GIF waiting to happen.
Leads Song Ji Hyo and Choi Jin Hyuk have good chemistry, both when they're fighting and when they're making googly eyes at each other. It's nice to see Choi Jin Hyuk swing back into a leading role after Gu Family Book and The Heirs, and Song Ji Hyo is particularly strong in the role of Jin Hee. The Running Man ace may need to stretch for the serious period dramas, but a spunky, vanity-free, modern-day heroine is right up her alley.
One particularly likable aspect of Emergency Couple is that the female characters are refreshingly competent and professional. Jin Hee may not have as much book smarts, but she turns out to be a bolder doctor in the field than Chang Min, proving the naysayers wrong. As fellow doctors and potential romantic rivals, Clara and Choi Yeo Jin are also beautiful, composed and sensible; they're direct about their feelings but not spiteful when said feelings aren't reciprocated. That's right, no evil jealous female second lead! The drama also touches on the social stigma and challenges faced by divorced women and single mothers.
Emergency Couple has a slightly offbeat tone and pacing to it, with screwball humor, random gags and dream sequences popping up here and there. It loses its way a bit as the story progresses, mainly in that the story often moves laterally rather than constructively, but the down-to-earth script and mostly likable characters keep things eminently watchable even when not enough is happening. Overall, Emergency Couple makes for an easygoing and enjoyable series that takes its relationship and medical drama aspects seriously while also remaining firmly in entertaining romantic comedy territory.
