 Superb tale of power struggle Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Eternal Empire" is a gripping tale of political intrigue set during Korea's Joseon dynasty. The inner circle of the Korean government is divided between those who wish the real power to lie with the bureaucracy and those who wish the king to remain in full control. Now that struggle has turned violent. A clerical official is found dead in the royal library. It is deemed scandalous for one to die within the King's own chambers, but the scandal explodes into something greater when it is revealed that the official was murdered by asphyxiation. Soon a series of people who might have relevant knowledge turn up dead and the King himself must become directly involved in attempting to suppress a conflict that threatens to yield chaos.

The tale is richly atmospheric, tautly dramatic, stylishly mounted and lensed, and beautifully acted, particularly by Ahn Sun Ki as King Jeongjo. Now there is a man who would command allegiance! Unfortunately, this DVD simply is a transfer of a rather dark and slightly degraded print of the film; one hopes that "Eternal Empire" eventually will receive the remastered DVD treatment it fully deserves. And when they create that remastered version, one hopes that the English subtitles get entirely redone; in this version, several lines simply went untranslated and many misspellings were present. Don't let these quibbles discourage you from watching this film; it is a classic!
