SYNOPSIS

동생 스티븐이 6살에 죽은 후, 술과 도박에 빠진 아버지 빌은 어머니와 스튜어트를 떠나버리고, 변변찮은 아마추어 복서로 일하는 스튜어트는 사고치고 싸우느라 경찰서를 들락거리기 일쑤이다. 어느 날 더 이상 복싱을 하면 안된다는 의사의 진단을 받은 스튜어트는 복싱을 그만두고 배우가 되기 위해 아버지가 살고 있는 LA로 향하고 오디션을 보면서 마트 정육 코너에서 일하게 된다. 그 곳에서 카르멘을 만나 첫 눈에 반하게 된 그는 독실한 카톨릭 신자인 그녀에게 잘 보이고자 교리 공부도 하고 세례도 받으며 사랑을 키워나간다. 어느 날 술을 마시고 오토바이를 타다 교통사고로 혼수상태에 빠지게 된 스튜어트는 생사의 갈림길에서 성모 마리아의 환영을 보고 기적적으로 깨어나게 된다. 동생한테 목숨을 빚졌다는 생각에 방황하며 살아왔지만 하느님이 자신을 살리고 용서하신 데에는 이유가 있을 것이라고 생각한 스튜어트는 이에 보답하고자 사제가 되기로 결심한다. 부모님과 카르멘의 반대에도 불구하고 어렵게 신학교에 입학해 사제가 되기 위한 수련을 받지만 치료 불가능한 진행성 근육 장애로 인해 몸이 점점 마비되고 있다는 사실을 알게 되는데…
