YesAsia Editorial Description
On the surface, Cao Nan (Hu Jun) appears to be an art dealer, but he's really a notorious robber who has been successful at avoiding being charged by the police. Lui (Andy Lau) is one of the upstanding police officers who has been after him. During their latest attempt to catch Cao in the act, Lui's arrest is disrupted by Bong (Gordon Lam), an ex-convict who happens to be Lui's former classmate. Despite the objections of his loving girlfriend (Yao Chen), Bong has returned to working for Lui's gang upon his release from prison. Even though Lui is forced to let Cao Nan go once more, his informant (Philip Keung) has agreed to go undercover in Lui's gang, despite the dangers involved. However, the consequences will drive Lui to the edge as his determination to catch Cao begins to overshadow his moral judgement.

A storm is heading to the city, and with it comes another occurrence so destructive, it vows to bring down everything it touches. A crew of seasoned criminals led by the notorious Nam (Hu Jun), armed with high-powered weapons, pulls off another smooth and violent armored car heist in broad daylight in a crowded street. Whoever tries to get in their way, they will show no mercy. This puts the police force to shame and humiliation.
A hardboiled senior police inspector Lui (Andy Lau), hot on the trails of Nam and his tight crew, determines to put an end to this madness that causes the lives of innocent people. But he soon comes face to face with the cruel reality that the usual police tactics are too futile to send these armed thieves behind bars. Extreme crime requires extreme justice, even if it means crossing his moral line. Tou (Lam Ka Tung), an ex-con desperate to leave his criminal past behind, volunteers to be Lui’s snitch in exchange for a fresh start with her girlfriend Bing (Yao Chen). But little does he know what hellish situation he’s getting himself into.

For a 110-minute movie, the cops-and-criminals 3D blockbuster Firestorm is stuffed with so many firearms, car crashes and punches that you may forget what the original story is about. Also a producer for the movie, Andy Lau ensures that the ticket is worth every penny for moviegoers by recreating Hong Kong's core business zone onscreen – Central – and then bombing it to pieces in an instant. That's not the only catch of the film. Andy is also a cop gone bad who faces his own moral derailing and gets trapped in a dark hole so deep that it eventually brings down everyone around him.
Lui Ming Chit (Andy Lau) is an upstanding police inspector who becomes obsessed with taking down the notorious criminal Cao Nan (Hu Jun). His operation is, however, sabotaged by his childhood friend To Sing Bon (Gordon Lam) who joined a robbery ring right after being freed from prison. Lui risks everything that he has – his integrity and even the lives of his informant Tong (Patrick Keung), his goddaughter and To for the sake of fulfilling his growing ambition. The plot looks relatively unimportant when the big-budget film begins and ends with the destruction of Hong Kong, made possible with an unlimited supply of ammo. There are a number of emotional lines running through the movie apart from Lui's moral disillusion, such as To's determination to mend his broken relationship with his girlfriend (Yao Chen) and Tong's praying in total helplessness for the safety of his daughter. However, director Alan Yuen falls short on forging adequate emotional resonance with viewers since all the emotional triggers in the movie are coated in gunfire and scares. Just when you're contemplating the meaning of justice, Firestorm hits you head-on with absorbing visuals and CGI. Though there are flaws here and there in the script and direction, Firestorm is still a fairly entertaining flick and quite a memorable outing for new director Yuen. The destruction of Central scene alone is worth the movie time, not to mention the irresistible charm of 51-year-old superstar Andy Lau. |

This customer review refers to Firestorm (2013) (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)
Fast, action-packed intense drama with a few good twists and turns in the plot, tight acting but with far too many explosions, cars, buses and cops flying through the air in the centre of HK in true Hollywood style. The Hong Kong swat police must be the most incompetent and poorest shots in the world. Hundreds of swat police outgunned and out-manoeuvred by a few baddies who nail dozens of HK's finest and can't be killed except by Andy who gets every one of them. Thank god the Hongkers police have Andy on their side. |
