YesAsia Editorial Description
Director Chang Cheh delivers some of his most impressive cinema work in The Five Venoms an action-packed, intrigue-filled mystery that introduced the world to the group of actors who would go on to be known as "The Venoms!" Yang De (Chiang Sheng) follows the orders of his deceased master to seek out the man's five former students, who were all masked members of the Poison Clan. The goal is to discover if the five are using their Poison Clan skills for evil, but Yang De's road is a tough and treacherous one. Some of the former students turn out to be righteous men, but others are steeped in wrongdoing and evil, and the motives of some are still shrouded in mystery. Who are the Five Venoms, and whose side are they on?
Also known as The 5 Deadly Venoms, The Five Venoms assembles a stellar cast of martial arts actors, each representing a different poisonous creature. Lu Feng is the Centipede, Sun Jian is the Scorpion, Law Meng is the Toad, Wei Bark is the Snake, and Philip Kwok is the Lizard! Along with Chiang Sheng, the six actors would go on to star various Chang Cheh films, including Invincible Shaolin and Ten Tigers From Kwantung. But it's their stunning animal-based martial arts work in The Five Venoms that started it all!

One of Chang Cheh's best
The martial arts master who has headed the Venom Clan is dying. The five fighters he taught wreaked havoc in the world and managed to amass a pile of loot that has been entrusted to sixth person. Now that the master is dying, he wants to try to right his wrongs. Therefore, he takes one final student, Yang De, trains him in all the various skills he taught the five Venoms, and gives him a mission: He is to find the various Venoms (all of whom now are living anonymously under secret identities), ally himself with those of the Venoms who have reformed their ways, eliminate those Venoms who continue to follow a life of crime, find the loot, and devote the loot to charitable purposes. Being a loyal student and righteous man, Yang De begins his mission, taking the guise of a street urchin. But how can he uncover the Venoms, whom can he trust, and how can he find the loot?
That's the set-up for this martial arts classic and it proves to be a sturdy vehicle for generating suspense and staging memorable fights. This remastered version really sparkles, bringing the story to life in a manner that my murky old VHS tape of the film never could. Director Chang Cheh spends little time on character development or parsing motives; instead, he emphasizes what fans of the genre seek -- action and more action. Nonetheless, what makes the film work as more than just a display of fighting skills is the thoughtful way in which the script works out the corrupt schemes of its evildoers and the detective work of its heroes. "The Five Venoms" is essential viewing for all fans of martial arts movies. |

CHANNEL 5 CLASSIC
A film that by many does not need an introduction. A fan favorite for so many people, and the amazing channel 5 Drive In Movie, saturdays at 1pm in the mid-eighties. This film has a lot going for it. The story and the character development make this film really stand out. Although this film is considered the first Venoms film, i would have to say Invincible Shaolin is where everything really kicks off for the team. Not to discredit any of the earlier work which featured the Venoms and Fu Sheng. The only negative in an almost perfect film would be the fact that the fighting is limited...as compared to later films. The intro training sequences in the beginning when the clan are wearing the masks is worth every penny! |

Deadly!!!
Deadly!!!
This movie is cult classic all the way and it will stay that way for a long time. Compared to Five fingers of death ( aka: King Boxer), the story stays fresh and original. Fights are well choeregraph and all of the cast talent is at it's full potential ( I'm talking about the Venoms of course ). |

Great martial arts show
Forgetting about the casts, the show is great with lots of kung fu styles and plots. |
