In the past few years, Perfume has only put out one new music release per year, usually in the second half of the year. This year, the trio is back bright and early in March with the dreamy synthpop sounds of the new single Flow.
Produced as always by Nakata Yasutaka, Flow begins immediately, almost abruptly, with sweet vocals over a light melody. The sweet, gentle sound sets a dreamy mood as the beats build up to a bubbly chorus. A low and steady reverberation effect underlies the transition following the first chorus, adding unexpected texture to the song. Nakata continues to variegate the song progression by curling different beats, effects and echoes into the chorus sections and bridge, achieving a rich yet airy sound that evokes the ambience of "flow flow flowing" up in the clouds. The single's B-side is a live version of Mawaru Kagami from Perfume's polygon wave tour in 2021. This song also has a strong dream-like quality, but instead of being high up in the clouds, it's a dream from deep down in the water. I love the dramatic opening of repeating chords and escalating beats that kick into a funky melody interlaced with psychedelic dance beats. The song's "Rotating Mirror" of light and darkness is wonderfully expressed in the seamless blend of rock-edged and sugary pop sounds. |
